N.C. Wesleyan Turns Two First Half Goals into 3-0 victory

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – A pair of first half goals by N.C. Wesleyan helped provide the Battling Bishops with a 3-0 victory in a USA South Conference soccer clash on Saturday, October 16th in Rocky Mount, N.C.

Kristel Thompson provided N.C. Wesleyan (4-9-1, 2-5-0 USA South) with the 1-0 lead when she converted an unassisted goal in the fifth-minute of play. That was quickly followed by a Megan Mackey strike, which came after a pass from Sophia Sweeney, as the Battling Bishops grabbed the 2-0 lead.

Sweeney played a role in providing N.C. Wesleyan with its third goal of the game, which came in the 75th-minute, when she hit an open Mariah Berkovich. The Battling Bishops capped off the match with 14 shots (nine SOG), receiving three shots each from Claire Bailey and Emily Ketchum. Berkovich and teammate Isabel Neall closed with two shots each.

Salem (6-9-1, 2-4-1 USA South) finished with six shots (two SOG) in the match, receiving two shots from Baylee Greenwood. The combination of Kylie Clark, Ellie Montes, Ashley Linden and Anna Fretwell had one shot each.

Jordan Tomberlin converted four saves in 48:15 minutes for Salem before giving way to first year teammate Tori Long, who had two saves in 41:45. Alicia Jacobs earned the victory in net for the Battling Bishops, closing with two saves.

Salem heads to Southern Virginia for the final regular season road match of the season on Wednesday, October 20th at 4 p.m.
