Late Goals Push Knights Past Salem

BUENA VISTA, Va. – Southern Virginia converted two goals 43 seconds apart, late in the second half, to earn a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Salem in USA South soccer action on Wednesday afternoon in Buena Vista, Va.

The first of those two strikes came from Makinna Winterton with 82:10 on the clock, who drove a pass from Makya Lindgren to even the game at four-all. Lindgren scored the game-winner just 43 seconds later when she netted her fourth goal of the match and provided the Knights with their fifth goal of the afternoon.

Lindgren gave Southern Virginia (9-5-2, 5-3-0 USA South) a 1-0 lead in the third minute of play on an unassisted strike. Salem's Ashley Linden evened the match in the 20th-minute with her second goal of the season.

Southern Virginia regained the lead 2-1 in the 45th-minute when Lindgren found the back of the net for her second goal of the match following a pass from Kassaundra Gorton. Salem's Baylee Greenwood delivered her ninth goal of the season in the 51st-minute, to even the match at 2-2.

Ellie Montes scored her sixth goal of the season, first since September 11th versus Eastern Mennonite, in the 53rd-minute of play to forge Salem in front 3-2. Just over four minutes later, in the 57th-minute, Layla Locklear posted her second goal of the campaign as the Spirits assumed the two-goal lead.

Southern Virginia's Delaynee McKeachnie hit an open Lindgren in the 61st-minute of play for Lindgren's third goal of the match as the Knights trimmed the Salem lead to 4-3.

Salem (6-10-1, 2-5-1 USA South) had both Jordan Tomberlin and Tori Long in net, resulting in seven saves. Tomberlin emerged with a match-high six saves among the nine shots she faced in 76:53, while Long stopped one of three shots on goal. Meanwhile, the Knights were led in goal by Abby Bloxham and Alyssa Trueman. Trueman closed the match with one save.

The Knights finished the match with a 16-5 edge in shots, finishing the match with nine shots in the second half.

Salem concludes the 2021 slate on Saturday, October 23rd, when the Spirits host William Peace at 1 p.m. at Varsity Field.
