Franco Scores Two Goals, Montes Delivers Game-Winner for Spirits

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Salem seniors Gina Franco and Ellie Montes played a key role in their 2021 Senior Day, helping the Spirits soccer team earn a 3-2 double overtime victory over William Peace to close out the season on a winning note.

Franco netted the first goal of the match in the 38th-minute, driving a pass from Montes past William Peace (4-7-3, 2-5-2 USA South) netminder Makenzie Jones.

Gabrielle Jones responded with a second half goal in the 54th-minute, knotting the match at one-all after teammate Rachel Alford hit her with an open pass. The Pacers followed that with a strike from Baylee Womack at 61:25, which came courtesy of a pass from Kyra Delaney.

Franco tallied her second goal of the match in the 68th-minute when Anna Fretwell hit her teammate in the offensive zone. It marked the first time in her career that Franco had scored multiple goals in a match.

After a scoreless first overtime, Baylee Greenwood found Montes, who delivered the game-winning goal in the 102nd-minute, marking her first of the season.

Salem closed with 26 shots, including 10 from Montes and five from Ashley Linden. Franco finished with three shots while both Greenwood and Fretwell closed with two each. Alexcina Wartski, who moved to 3-0-0 on the season, led the Spirits in net with seven saves. Jordan Tomberlin had one save for Salem on the afternoon.
