Tomberlin Receives Third Career USA South Defensive Player of the Week Award

ROME, Ga. – For the second time in the 2022 season and the third in her career, Salem's Jordan Tomberlin has been named as USA South Defensive Player of the Week. Tomberlin earned the accolade from USA South Conference in an announcement from the league office on Monday, October 24th.

Tomberlin combined for 13 saves as Salem finished 1-1-0 on the week in a pair of matches against Brevard and Pfeiffer, after taking over in net in the second half of both matches.

Tomberlin becomes the first player in Salem soccer history to earn the USA South Defensive Player of the Week honors three times in a career. When she received the honor on September 12th, she placed herself alongside Sydney Priest as the only two-time winner. Tomberlin also brought home the honor on October 11, 2021, marking her first-ever in-season award.

The Merritt Island, Fla., native took over in net in the clash with Brevard, facing a 1-0 deficit after a first half goal by the Tornados' Grace Black. Tomberlin anchored a Salem defensive attack that was peppered with seven shots in the frame and made five saves in goal for the Spirits.

Three days later, on Salem's Senior Day, Tomberlin again took over in net in the second half of the contest. This time she delivered eight saves and helped Salem preserve a 2-1 lead against Pfeiffer. Tomberlin and the Salem defense faced 30 shots over the course of the contest, including 12 shots on goal.

Her eight saves against Pfeiffer marked the eighth time in the 2022 campaign that she has tallied at least five saves. It was her third-most single-match saves of the season, three off a season-high 11 saves, which she converted against both Johnson & Wales (Sept. 10) and Randolph (Sept. 14).

Tomberlin's award this week marks the fifth in-season from the USA South Conference. Darilyn Nieto has been named USA South Rookie of the Week three times over the course of the slate.
