Tomberlin Claims Third USA South Defensive Player of the Week Honor

ROME, Ga. – For the second time in as many weeks and the third time in the 2022 season, Salem goalkeeper Jordan Tomberlin claimed the USA South Defensive Player of the Week. Tomberlin, who received the award on both September 12th and October 24th, was named this week's recipient in an official announcement from the league office on Monday afternoon.

In two matches last week, Tomberlin combined for 11 saves against N.C. Wesleyan and Greensboro. She opened the week by inheriting a 2-0 deficit against the Battling Bishops at the intermission. In the second half, Tomberlin allowed one goal and stopped three shots in the Spirits 3-1 setback.

Four days later, in a clash with Greensboro which gave the Spirits a chance move to seventh in the USA South Conference standings, Tomberlin emerged with eight saves in a scoreless tie. The 0-0 deadlock, which marked the first in the head-to-head series between the two USA South Conference rivals, came as Tomberlin and her counterpart, Sofia Pagnamenta, stopped a combined 10 shots.

Tomberlin, who has made 31 saves in her last four matches combined, has at least five saves in 12 matches this season. She finished the season second in the league in saves (82), just 11 saves off the pace established by Pagnamenta.

The Merritt Island, Fla., native notched her fourth career USA South Defensive Player of the Week by virtue of Monday's announcement. Outside of her three this season, Tomberlin also brought home the honor on October 11, 2021, marking her first-ever in-season award.

She joins teammate Darilyn Nieto as a three-time recipient of an in-season award from the USA South Conference this season. Nieto opened the 2022 campaign with three consecutive USA South Rookie of the Week awards.
