Salem Soccer Earns USA South Fall Sportsmanship Award

ROME, Ga. – The Salem soccer team picked up its third USA South Conference postseason award on Tuesday, November 29th, when it was recognized as Fall Sportsmanship Award recipient for women's soccer in the league.

The announcement of the team award, the first-ever in program history for the soccer team, comes three weeks after Darilyn Nieto and Alyson Gammons were recognized as part of the 2022 USA South All-Conference Team by the conference.

Nieto became the first player in Salem soccer history and first Spirit in USA South Conference history to earn the league's Rookie of the Year honor, along with being named as a First Team All-Conference honoree. Gammons was distinguished as a member of the USA South All-Sportsmanship Team.

As for the Fall Sportsmanship Award for women's soccer, it was established in the 2004-2005 academic year the USA South Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee instituted a Conference-wide Sportsmanship Award.

In total, there is a Sportsmanship Award established for each of the 12 Conference-sponsored team sports. For each of the sports, all team members vote for the teams they deemed to have demonstrated the best overall sportsmanship throughout the season. The team garnering the most votes receives that sports' Sportsmanship Award.

The institution which wins the most individual sport awards will be presented with the overall USA South Sportsmanship Trophy. The award was developed as a result of the SAAC's commitment to maintaining a sportsmanlike environment on each of our campuses.
