Salem Swimming Hosts Saturday Matinee Versus Greensboro

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –
The Salem swimming team completes its first month of competition with a meet against intercity rival Greensboro on Saturday, October 30th at the Salem Aquatic Center. The meet against The Pride begins at 2 p.m.

It marks the first time that Greensboro has made a trip to Winston-Salem to face the Spirits at the Salem Aquatic Center pool since February 2, 2010. Salem competed in three events in 2019-20 that also included The Pride: Guilford Invitational (Oct. 5), Lees-McRae/Greensboro Dual (Oct. 26) and the Guilford/Greensboro Dual (Jan. 18).

SPIRITS OPEN 2021 SLATE WITH PFEIFFER: Competing with a limited roster, the Salem swimming team opened its 2021-22 slate on Saturday, October 9th, as the Spirits took on Pfeiffer.

Salem, with just Allison Wakefield and Abigail Hawkins competing, took part in five events over the course of the afternoon. Wakefield closed out the competition with a pair of second-place finishes along with two fifth-place performances. Hawkins, competing for her first time as a collegiate swimmer, had one third-place finish, two fourth-place outings and a sixth-place finish against the Falcons.

PREVIEWING SATURDAY'S MEET: Salem will have eight of its 10 swimmers participating in Saturday's clash against The Pride.

The afternoon begins with the 1000 freestyle, featuring Salem captain Allison Wakefield. Abigail Hawkins will then take part in the 50-yard butterfly race. The quartet of Hawkins, Tori Long, Kylie Clark and Olivia Nivens make up the Salem field in the 50-yard backstroke.

Salem continues the afternoon in the 50-yard breaststroke which will consist of Sophia Lee, Nivens and Anna Fretwell. In the 50-yard freestyle, the Spirits will have five swimmers including Clark, Fretwell, Hawkins, Long and Nivens.

Wakefield and Fretwell will make up the Salem field in the 500-yard freestyle, while the tandem of Lee and Hawkins take part in the 100-yard individual medley. Wakefield returns to the pool to participate in the 100-yard backstroke. Lee continues her afternoon by representing Salem in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The final event for Salem, the 100-yard freestyle, will have six Spirits involved, including Fretwell, Clark, Lee, Long, Wakefield and Nivens.

ANALYZING GREENSBORO: Greensboro opened the 2021 season in Lexington, Virginia, at the ODAC Relays on October 9th. For the women, the team of Kilee Kemp, Virginia Hufschmitt and Gabrielle Hunker swam in the 3x50 Back Relay. The trio finished the race in 1:53.18. Later in the day, the combination of Kemp, Hufschmitt and Hunker finished the 3x100 IM in 4:15.53.

Four days later, Greensboro clashed with Guilford and suffered a 77-47 setback to the Quakers. Virginia Hufschmitt swam in the 200 Free, 500 Free and the 100 Breast. The freshman's times were 2:55.66, 7:39.85 and 1:35.32, respectively.

Kilee Kemp won the 50 Free (25.68), 200 IM (2:43.54) and the 100 Back (1:13.94) on the evening. Gabrielle Hunker finished second in the 50 Free with a time of 26.57. The freshman also finished second in the 100 Free and 100 Breast with times of 1:15.61 and 1:58.58, respectively.

The most recent meet for Greensboro came on October 22nd, where The Pride faced Sweet Briar and Ferrum in a dual in Ferrum, Virginia. Sweet Briar completed a 137-24 victory over Greensboro and Ferrum posted a 106-30 victory on the afternoon.
