Salem Treks to Greensboro for Guilford Invite

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –
The Salem swim team will make the short trek to the Greensboro Aquatic Center on Saturday, November 6th to compete in the Guilford College Invite. The meet, which marks Salem's third of the season, begins at 10 a.m.

The Spirits are coming off dual with Greensboro, which took place on Saturday, October 30th at the Salem Aquatic Center.

Salem swimming wrapped up its second meet of the season on Saturday, October 30th, with 13 Top-3 finishes. The Spirits were led individually by Allison Wakefield, who had four Top-3 performances, and Abigail Hawkins who reached the podium on three occasions.

Hawkins capped off her afternoon with a pair of first-place performances in the 50 butterfly, logging a time of 31.51, and the 50 backstroke with a mark of 41.25. She also grabbed third in the 50 freestyle, touching the wall in 32.93.

Wakefield's day included a first-place in the 500 freestyle, which she finished in 8:10.00. The Lillington, N.C., native also claimed three second-place finishes in the 1000 freestyle (16:33.00), 100 backstroke (1:43.66) and 100 freestyle (1;19.49).

This weekend marks the second time in program history that the Spirits are taking part in the Guilford College Invite. The last time was on Saturday, October 5, 2019, when the Salem swim program made its return to the pool after a nine-year hiatus.

LAST TIME AT THE GUILFORD INVITE: The Salem swim team completed its return to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 5, by finishing seventh at the Guilford College Invitational held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. The Spirits, who finished with 55 points in the day-long event, had four individual Top-15 finishes and one Top-10 team outing (seventh) in the 200-yard medley relay.

The first race of the day was the 100-yard butterfly, which included Salem's Olivia Kleven, who placed 11th in a time of 1:13.40. She was just over 11 seconds off the pace established UNC Pembroke's Ketlyn Rodriguez Matos, who captured first place with a mark of 1:02.30.

Kleven grabbed the first Top-10 of the year for the Spirits in the 100-yard breaststroke, tapping the wall in 1:23.15, recording the eighth-best time of the event. Salem's Emily Inman wrapped up her second event of the day with a time of 1:43.08 in the 100-yard breaststroke, placing 24th in the process.

Salem earned its second Top-10 finish of the event in the 200-yard medley relay where the combination of Allison Wakefield, Kleven, Inman and Madison Robertson combined for a time of 2:38.36, placing seventh. Top honors in the event went to UNC Pembroke, which posted the only sub-two-minute time (1:56.05).

Kleven posted her second Top-10 of the afternoon session in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing ninth in a time of 2:47.92. She was joined in the event by Madison Robertson, who finished 18th with a time of 3:17.78.
