Spirits Host Three Teams in Swim Meet on Saturday Afternoon

Salem vs. St. Andrews / Columbia College / Warren Wilson | January 21 | Salem Aquatic Center | Winston-Salem, N.C. | 2 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT (vs. Ferrum / December 3, 2022)
The Salem swim team wrapped up its first home meet of the 2022-23 season with a setback to Ferrum (250-156), with senior Kylie Clark leading the way as she collected three Top-3 finishes, giving her 10 in her Spirits' career.

Clark began her afternoon by competing in the 1000 freestyle, becoming the first Spirit to swim the event since Allison Wakefield on October 30, 2021, posting a time of 19:37.11. Clark is just the fourth different Salem swimmer in program history to attempt the 1000 freestyle, joining Rachel Fichthorn, Kristi Moe and the aforementioned Wakefield to compete in the event. Fichthorn owns the program record (12:25.08) in the 1000 freestyle, setting the mark in an event that pitted Salem against Agnes Scott, Greensboro and Sweet Briar on February 5, 2008.

Eleanore Regenthal and Scarlett Urbaez finished first and second, respectively, in the 200 freestyle event. Regenthal claimed her first collegiate first place of her career with a time of 3:37.18, while Urbaez completed the event in 3:47.35.

Regenthal then took part in the 50 freestyle, closing fourth with a mark of 40.76.

Clark returned to action in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall first with a time of 1:35.63, edging out Urbaez, who finished second in 1:38.75.

Regenthal and Clark finished second and third, respectively, in the 200 backstroke race. Regenthal reached the wall in 3:59.17, while Clark's time was logged at 4:15.03.

Urbaez closed out the event for the Spirits with a second-place showing in the 500 freestyle after tapping the wall at 10:47.89.

The following afternoon, Salem returns home to host the combination of Greensboro, Piedmont and Chowan in a tri-meet.

ST. ANDREWS SEASON RECAP
The Knights are taking part in their sixth meet of the season this weekend and are 0-2 on slate in team competition. St. Andrews competed in three meets in November where no team score was kept, after suffering a 95-27 setback in the season opener against Pfeiffer (Oct. 8) along with a 180-16 loss to West Virginia Tech on October 29th.

This weekend marks the last meet for the Knights, who complete their season at the AAC Conference Tournament beginning on February 9th.

COLUMBIA SEASON RECAP
The Koalas opened their 2022-23 season by hosting a quad meet on November 5th, following that with a trip to Columbus, Ga., 12 days later at the Point Invitational.

Columbia College then made the trek to West Virginia Tech on December 3rd before hosting the same West Virginia Tech squad last Saturday afternoon.

This weekend marks the second of two January meets for the Koalas, who will head to Valley, Alabama for the Point Heptathlon before taking part in the AAC Championships in February.

WARREN WILSON SEASON RECAP
Warren Wilson has participated in five meets entering this weekend, including the Guilford Invitational, where the Owls placed fifth of seven units on October 1st.

The Owls have also faced Greensboro (Oct. 22), Randolph and Bridgewater (Oct. 28) and Piedmont, which opened November action on November 5th. The last meet for Warren Wilson came on November 18-19, when it participated in the Pacer Invitational.

Warren Wilson will follow this meet by again meeting Salem on January 27th, when the two teams face Mars Hill, and then complete the month against a clash with Converse and UNC Pembroke on January 28th.

The Owls conclude the campaign at the Independent South Swim Conference Championships on February 16-18.
