Spirits Face Two Meet in Two-Day Stretch Starting Friday

LAST TIME OUT (vs. Warren Wilson / Columbia College | January 21)
The Salem swim team, making its first appearance in the 2023 calendar year, received two Top-3 finishes from Kylie Clark and a solid performance from Eleanore Regenthal, when the Spirits hosted Warren Wilson and Columbia College in a meet on Saturday, January 21st at the Salem Aquatic Center.

Warren Wilson captured the team portion of the meet, earning a 644-80 victory over host Salem as well as a 321-273 win over Columbia College. The Spirits also suffered a 274-86 setback to Columbia in the women's portion of the event.

Meanwhile, the Warren Wilson men claimed a 277-80 win over the Koala men's team.

Clark picked up two third-place finishes for the Salem team in the event. She touched the wall in a time of 1:42.08 in the 100 backstroke and later in the afternoon posted a time of 37.62 in the 50 freestyle. Those Top-3 finishes mark the eighth for Clark this season and the 37.62 mark in the 50 freestyle is the second-best in 2022-23.

Regenthal capped off the event by placing second in the 200 backstroke, posting a time of 3:52.22, while finishing fifth in the 200 freestyle (3:58.62) and seventh in the 50 freestyle (41.85). Regenthal posted her personal best in the 200 backstroke, shaving just over four second off her previous mark of 3:56.39.

JANUARY STRETCH CONTINUES FOR SPIRITS
This weekend marks the second of two home meets for Salem in January, after hosting Columbia College and Warren Wilson at the Aquatic Center on January 21st.

The Spirits open the weekend by making a trip to Mars Hill, N.C., to square off against both Mars Hill and Warren Wilson on January 27th.

The following afternoon, Salem returns home to host the combination of Greensboro, Piedmont and Chowan in a tri-meet.

CLARK, REGENTHAL BREAKDOWN
Kylie Clark has put together eight Top-3 finishes for Salem in the 2022-23 campaign, including a pair of first-place finishes in the 50 backstroke (Greensboro Dual) and 100 freestyle (Ferrum Dual).

Clark enters this weekend four shy of Olivia Kleven's career mark for most Top-3 finishes in program history, amassing 12 in her Salem career. Kleven leads the way with 16, all which came in the 2019-20 campaign. One more Top-3 finish for Clark will place her in a tie with Allison Wakefield, who has the second-most Top-3 performances in Salem history with 13.

Meanwhile, Regenthal has claimed eight Top-5 finishes this season, earning first place in the 200 freestyle in a clash with Ferrum on December 3rd.

MARS HILL SEASON RECAP
For the first time since the 2007-08 season, Salem's inaugural campaign, the Spirits will clash with Mars Hill. The two teams first met on November 15, 2007, in Mars Hill in a dual that included Emory & Henry. The score from the previous meet with the Lions is unknown.

The Lions began their season by finishing fourth of five teams competing at the King Invite in Kingsport, Tennessee on October 1st. Two weeks later, Mars Hill suffered a 125-70 setback to Emory & Henry, but followed that with a 117-59 victory over Chowan on October 22nd. After dropping contests to both Converse (109-89) and Lees-McRae (142-101) in succession, Mars Hill came through with a fourth-place outing at the Bulldog Invite in Barbourville, Kentucky.

When the calendar flipped to 2023, Mars Hill opened January with a 112-91 win over Piedmont on January 7th. One week later, Emory & Henry picked up its second win of the season by a 132-60 margin, which was followed by a 155-42 victory by Carson-Newman on January 20th.

Friday marks the first of two meets, which complete the regular season schedule, before Mars Hill competes in the South Atlantic Conference Championships on February 8-11.

WARREN WILSON SEASON RECAP
Warren Wilson will be facing Salem for the second time in as many weekends, after making the trek to Salem on Saturday, January 21st.

The Owls completed their most recent meet against Salem by defeating Columbia college by a 321-273 margin on the women's side and a 277-80 margin in men's competition.

Warren Wilson also completed a victory over Salem in the meet, claiming a 352-80 decision in the competition.

GREENSBORO SEASON RECAP
The Pride is putting its finishing touches on the 2022-23 regular season this weekend when it makes the trip to Salem.

Greensboro opened the slate with a 115-37 victory over the Spirits, quickly following with a 98-97 decision over crosstown rival Guilford on January 10th.

In its second meet of January, Greensboro suffered a 124-54 setback to William Peace on the 14th. On January 21st, Greensboro was handed a 116-28 defeat to Ferrum at home, marking the home finale.

Greensboro will close the season at the ODAC Championships on February 9-12.

PIEDMONT SEASON RECAP
Piedmont heads to Salem for just the second time in program history and first since January 29, 2022 this weekend.

The Lions bring a 5-2 mark into the meet after rattling off four straight wins between October 9, 2022 and November 5, 2022. During that stretch, Piedmont took down William Peace (161-100), Brenau (132-33), Point (132-23) and Warren Wilson (192-34).

Piedmont claimed its fifth win of the slate against Union (Ky.) with a 162-15 victory, but came up short in a clash with Mars Hill (112-91) in its most recent meet on January 7, 2023.

CHOWAN SEASON RECAP
The Hawks will make their first-ever appearance in a meet with Salem on Saturday afternoon after being added to the meet that includes both Greensboro and Piedmont last week.

Chowan has an 0-8 mark in team competition this season after opening the slate with a 189-33 setback to Barton on October 7th. In that same meet, which took place at East Carolina, Chowan suffered setbacks to both Campbell (205-25) and the host Pirates (196-29).

October concluded with a pair of outings against Converse (125-57) and Mars Hill (117-59) in Spartanburg, S.C., both resulting in losses.

After taking part in the Pacer Invite in Cary, N.C., on November 18-19, Chowan faced off against UNC Pembroke (211-39), Salem University (158-68) and Barton (191-28), resulting in three straight losses.
