Salem Tennis Hosts Methodist in League Clash

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem tennis team will make a quick return to the court on Saturday, April 2nd, when it hosts Methodist at the Bert Lain Tennis Center at 2 p.m. This match comes just four days after the Spirits faced Southern Virginia in Buena Vista, Va., on Wednesday afternoon.

Salem remains in search of its first team win of the season after suffering consecutive 9-0 setbacks to USA South Conference foes Averett (March 26) and Southern Virginia (March 30) in succession.

Alyson Gammons continues to lead the way in singles play with two wins, while Alyssa Cosentino, Haley Gilley and Zakeria Pomeroy have one each.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR: The Spirits have rescheduled their match with N.C. Wesleyan for April 18th at 1 p.m. The match had originally been scheduled for March 20th, but it was postponed.

METHODIST TENNIS WRAPS UP SOLID MARCH: The Methodist tennis team marched through the third month of 2022 with an 8-1 record with the lone setback coming to the University of Lynchburg (5-4) on March 27th.

The Monarchs had a seven-match winning streak from March 7 through March 26, defeating Lake Forest (5-4), Roanoke (8-1), Gordon (7-2), Drew (5-4), Mary Baldwin (8-1), Hollins (9-0) and Southern Virginia (6-3) in succession.

After suffering a one-point loss to the Hornets, Methodist closed out the final match of the month in 9-0 fashion by defeating Pfeiffer on Wednesday.

Five Monarchs have at least three singles wins on the season, including Kamdyn Balko, Luciana Forma, Hannah Higgins, Sydni Lewis and Veva Willocks. The top doubles team for Methodist tennis is Megan Kidd and Jill Lawrence, who are 3-3 on the season.

RECAPPING MATCH VERSUS TROJANS: The Salem tennis team competed against both Southern Virginia and the wind in its second league match of the season, where the Trojans claimed a 9-0 victory in Buena Vista, Va., on Wednesday afternoon.

The Trojans (3-2, 1-1 USA South) grabbed all three points in doubles action, opening with an 8-3 victory by Campbell Bueler and Alyssa Sewell in No. 2 action against Salem's (0-4, 0-2 USA South) Alyssa Cosentino and Alyson Gammons. Moriah Elton and Grace Howell picked up the second doubles win of the day in No. 3 play, defeating the tandem of Gina Franco and Ashley Linden by an 8-1 margin in their first-ever collegiate tennis match.

The Trojans' No. 1 pairing of Paula Snelson and Jillian Arnold took down Salem's Haley Gilley and McKinley Rice by an 8-3 margin to complete doubles action.

Snelson collected her second victory of the afternoon in the No. 1 singles clash against Gilley with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph that delivered the Trojans their fourth point of the match. Jillian Arnold grabbed the decisive team win for Southern Virginia with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Cosentino.

Annalise Schetsselaar stretched the Trojans' lead to 6-0 following a 6-1, 6-1 victory against McKinley Rice in No. 2 singles. Her teammate Hailey Seamons contributed a 6-2, 6-0 win in No. 5 singles against Franco, moving Southern Virginia's lead to 7-0.

Madeline Fisher collected a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Gammons in No. 4 singles before Bueler added a 6-1, 6-0 win against Linden in her first-ever singles match.
