Gilley Named to USA South Sportsmanship Team

ROME, Ga. – Salem sophomore Haley Gilley was named to the 2021-22 USA South Conference Tennis All-Sportsmanship Team in an announcement that was made by the league on Friday, April 29th.

Gilley improved on her first year numbers with the Spirits' tennis program, which resulted in three singles wins and two doubles victories, by claiming four victories in both singles and doubles action in 2021-22.

All four of Gilley's singles victories in 2021-22 came as the No.1 seed for Salem, including two against USA South opponents. She grabbed her first victory of the slate on March 18th, downing Maira Teurel (Johnson & Wales) in three sets. Gilley would pick up her second win at Greensboro College, in a clash with Jada Ore, before adding singles triumphs against Teurel (Johnson & Wales) and Gretchen Lutz (Mary Baldwin) in a pair of late April matches.

The Pilot Mountain, N.C., native also emerged with a single-season best four doubles wins for Salem, all alongside teammate McKinley Rice. The pair, who notched the most doubles victories of any Salem duo, earned their first win (8-0) in a clash with Hannah Stokes and Miranda Montes (Johnson & Wales) on March 18th.

The second doubles win for the Gilley and Rice duo came against Ore and Natalie Habich (Greensboro College), followed by triumphs over Teurel and Eboni Montague (Johnson & Wales) on April 21st. The final victory came the following afternoon over Mary Baldwin's tandem of Lutz and Hannah Eastridge by a score of 8-4.
