Inclement Weather Moves Agnes Scott Match to Thursday at Salem

LAST TIME OUT (vs. Hollins)
The Salem tennis team suffered a 7-2 setback to visiting Hollins in its spring season opener when the two teams collided on Saturday, March 4th at the Bert Lain Tennis Center.

Hollins opened the match by claiming an 8-1 victory in No. 1 doubles when Jessica Willebeek-LeMair and Millie Shaw downed the Salem tandem of Haley Gilley and Cadence Durham. Teammates Peyton Jones and Charlie Miller provided the second point with an 8-2 win over the pair of Ashley Linden and Alyson Gammons.

Salem countered with its first point of the spring season as Alana Bridges and Harley Hedrick took down the pair of Mei Shalaby and Carlia Kearney by a margin of 8-5.

Willebeek-LeMair added her second win of the day in the singles competition with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Durham in the clash of No. 1 singles. Millie Shaw also came through with a victory for Hollins (6-0, 7-5) by downing Gilley.

Peyton Jones was one of five Hollins points in singles, downing Griffis by a score of 6-2, 6-0. In No. 4 singles, Gammons picked up the lone victory of the afternoon of the day for the Spirits by defeating Charlie Miller by scores of 7-5, 6-4.

Hollins added its final two points with victories in the No. 5 and No. 6 flight singles. Kearney was responsible for a 6-1, 7-5 win over Linden in the fifth-seeded clash, while Shalaby got past Bridges in No. 6 doubles in three sets by scores of 6-4, 4-6, 10-4.

TWO MATCHES IN FOUR-DAY STRETCH FOR SALEM
The Spirits have two matches in a four-day stretch, facing Agnes Scott on Thursday, March 16th. Salem was originally scheduled to face Agnes Scott in Decatur, Ga., however inclement weather in the forecast forced both coaches to change the venue of the match. The Spirits will then head to Charlotte, N.C., to face Johnson & Wales on Sunday, March 19th.  

These matches will mark the second and third in March, which began with a 7-2 setback to Hollins at the Bert Lain Tennis Center.

ALL-TIME SERIES WITH AGNES SCOTT
Agnes Scott owns a 12-3 lead in the all-time series between the two programs, winning the last six head-to-head meetings.

The Scotties most recent winning streak began with a 6-3 victory in Winston-Salem, N.C., on April 4, 2015. Since that point, Agnes Scott has three wins by allowing Salem just one point, which came on April 25, 2015 (5-1), April 9, 2016 (8-1) and April 16, 2016 (8-1). The most recent meeting between the two programs came on April 9, 2017, where Agnes Scott prevailed by a 9-0 win over the Spirits.

All three of the Salem victories in the series came in 2014, including a pair of 5-4 wins on March 30th and April 11th. The last triumph by the Spirits came on April 26, 2014, in the Great South Athletic Conference Tournament by a 5-1 margin.

SPIRITS IN SEARCH OF FIRST SPRING VICTORY
The Salem tennis team, which claimed an 8-1 exhibition win over Patrick Henry Community College on September 17th, is in search of its first win in the 2023 season.

Salem suffered a 5-4 setback in a clash with Pfeiffer, which also came on September 17th, before ending the fall portion of the schedule with an 8-1 loss to Randolph the following afternoon.

The Spirits last took the court on Saturday, March 4th, when Hollins paid a visit to Winston-Salem. Hollins ended the afternoon with a 7-2 victory.

AGNES SCOTT GAINING MOMENTUM WITH MARCH WINS
Agnes Scott, which is in the midst of a trip to the Tarheel State, has claimed back-to-back against Greensboro (6-3) and William Peace (5-4) on March 14th and 15th, respectively.

Those victories halted a four-match losing skid by the Scotties to open the season, which began with a 6-1 setback to Truett McConnell on February 17th. Two days later, against Pfeiffer, the Falcons emerged with a 9-0 victory in Decatur, Ga.

Agnes Scott ended the opening month of the slate with a 9-0 defeat to Oglethorpe (Feb. 25). Huntingdon marked the first opponent of March for the Scotties, who lost a 6-3 decision to the Hawks at home.
