RALEIGH, N.C. – The Salem tennis team laid claim to its first USA South Conference win of the season, earning a 6-3 victory at William Peace on Wednesday afternoon in Raleigh, N.C.
The Spirits claimed their first of two doubles points by default, giving Alana Bridges and Abrielle Eckenroth the victory. The Pacers answered with a point of their own, which came with an 8-1 victory from Hayley McNair and Camryn Straughn after a defeat of Emily Griffis and Cadence Durham.
The second Salem doubles point came from the tandem of Ashley Linden and Alyson Gammons, who earned an 8-1 win over Abbie Papale and Kaitlyn Bliss.
Eckenroth picked up her second point of the day by default in No. 6 singles, giving Salem the 3-1 lead. Linden delivered a victory in No. 5 singles (6-0, 6-0) with her defeat of Haley Gilliam.
William Peace bounced back and came through with a victory from Straughn in No. 2 singles, who triumphed over Griffis by scores of 6-0, 6-0. However, the Spirits clinched their team win with a victory in No. 4 singles by Gammons, who posted a 6-1, 6-1 win against Bliss.
The sixth Salem point came by virtue of a Bridges win, who took down Papale in a decisive 6-0, 6-1 win. The final William Peace point came from McNair in No. 1 singles, after her defeat of Cadence Durham by 6-0, 6-3 scores.
