LAST GAME RECAP (vs. Brevard)
The Brevard tennis team claimed a 9-0 victory over host Salem when two clashed at the Bert Lain Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon in USA South Conference action.

Salem's day was highlighted by the return of senior Haley Gilley, who has missed a significant portion of the season due to a fractured ankle. The Spirits suffered an 8-1 loss to Brevard's No. 1 seeded doubles pair Hannah Hersh and Alli Kogoy, who defeated Emily Griffis and Alana Bridges. That was followed by a Hamrick Perry and Savannah Anderson win in No. 3 doubles over Alyson Gammons and Abrielle Eckenroth by an 8-4 margin.

Brooke Garland and Sophie Trantham completed the doubles sweep for the Tornados with an 8-4 victory against Ashley Linden and Cadence Durham.

Brevard grabbed a 4-0 advantage with a 6-0, 6-0 victory by Kogoy in No. 2 singles against Griffis. The Tornados secured the team victory as Hersh posted a 6-2, 6-1 win against Durham in No. 1 singles. The sixth Brevard point came by virtue of a 6-2, 6-1 triumph from Garland in her No. 3 singles clash with Bridges.

Perry was responsible for the seventh Brevard point of the afternoon, defeating Gammons in No. 5 singles by scores of 6-2, 6-1. Gilley, competing from the fourth seed for Salem in her return, suffered a 6-1, 6-1 setback to Brevard's Trantham. The final Tornado point came from the No. 6 seed, Anderson, who fought past Linden in three sets by scores of 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.

SENIOR DAY SET FOR MONDAY, APRIL 24TH
On Monday, April 24th, Salem will honor the 2022-23 senior class of Mackenzie Allison, Alyson Gammons, Haley Gilley and Jasmine Scott for their contributions to the program.

Allison: Mackenzie Allison has served as the tennis team manager for each of the last two seasons for head coach Ed Steele. Allison is set to graduate in May with a bachelor of science degree in Exercise Science and a minor in coaching.

Gammons: A two-sport athlete, who also played soccer at Salem, Alyson Gammons joined the Spirits tennis program in 2022. She finished off the 2022 campaign with five singles victories and two doubles wins and enters this weekend with four singles wins and four doubles victories.

Gilley: Haley Gilley began her collegiate career by claiming three singles wins and two doubles victories as a first year at Salem in 2019. In 2021-22, Gilley picked up four more singles victories, all as the No. 1 seed, along with four doubles wins. Hampered by injury for most of the 2023 spring slate, Gilley has claimed two singles victories and two doubles wins at this point.

Scott: Jasmine Scott has taken part in four official matches, all as the No. 6 seed in singles competition. Additionally, she has competed in three doubles matches alongside partners Harley Hedrick, Abrielle Eckenroth and Alyson Gammons. Scott is a sociology major with a concentration in criminal studies.

WILDCATS, SALEM CLASH FOR SECOND TIME IN 2022-23
For the second time this season and the second time in the last three matches, Salem will face an opponent from earlier on the schedule when the Spirits face Johnson & Wales on Friday, April 20th. The match will serve as Salem tennis' Morgan's Message Match. 

Salem will be looking to avenge a 5-3 setback to the Wildcats, which came in Charlotte, N.C. in mid-March.

MARCH 19, 2023 RECAP: The Salem tennis team completed its second match in a four-day stretch on Sunday, March 19th in Charlotte, N.C., suffering a 5-3 setback to Johnson & Wales at the Park Road Park facility.

Johnson & Wales claimed the first point of the match when the No. 3 pairing of Hannah Stokes and Erin Weidner defeated the Spirits' tandem of Harley Hedrick and Jasmine Scott by an 8-0 margin.

Salem answered with back-to-back points in doubles, the first coming from Haley Gilley and Alana Bridges, who took down Kourtney Newton and Kendall Conrad by an 8-4 score. Cadence Durham and Emily Griffis followed that with an 8-7 victory of their own in No. 1 doubles, defeating Kourtney Newton and Kendall Conrad to give Salem the 2-1 lead.

Weidner picked up her second point of the day in No. 6 singles by taking down Scott by a 6-0, 6-2 margin. Conrad avenged her loss in doubles with a No. 3 singles victory (6-1, 6-1) over Gillis, giving Johnson & Wales a 3-2 lead.

Stokes provided the Wildcats with a point in No. 5 singles, claiming a 6-2, 6-3 win over Hedrick. The decisive team point came when Rodgers fought past Durham in three sets by scores of 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.

TOPPING THE INDIVIDUAL CHARTS FOR SALEM
Salem has six players with at least two wins in singles action, including Alana Bridges (five) and Alyson Gammons (four), who lead the way. Bridges has reach the five-win mark by earning two wins at both No. 3 and No. 4, while grabbing a win at No. 5. Meanwhile, Gammons has three of her four victories as the No. 4 seed and one as the No. 5 seed for Salem.

Both Abrielle Eckenroth and Ashley Linden as tied for the third-most singles wins on the team with three apiece. Eckenroth has two wins in her last two singles matches, which came against both Mary Baldwin and Southern Virginia.

The top doubles team for the Spirits remains Bridges and Harley Hedrick, who are 3-0, despite Hedrick's injury sustained in an automobile accident. Three other combinations are all tied with two victories. Those duos include Cadence Durham / Emily Griffith, Alyson Gammons / Ashley Linden and Alana Bridges / Abrielle Eckenroth.

ANALYZING CLASH WITH JOHNSON & WALES
The Wildcats are 6-5 overall on the season and are 2-1 since the last outing against Salem in mid-March. Johnson & Wales has lost five matches to either postponement or cancellation since facing the Spirits. The wins came against Southwest Virginia CC (7-2) and Patrick Henry CC (8-1).

ANALYZING CLASH WITH GREENSBORO
Head-to-Head vs. Greensboro: Salem is 8-5 in 13 all-time meetings against Greensboro, winning the last head-to-head meeting, which came on April 9, 2022, by a 9-0 margin. Prior to that Greensboro had won back-to-back meetings in 2019 on March 11 and March 31. Salem has a four-match winning streak, which spanned from March 5, 2010 through April 9, 2015, and a three-match winning streak, which lasted from February 18, 2017 until April 6, 2018, in the all-time series.

Greensboro enters the weekend with an 0-10 mark and an 0-8 record when facing USA South Conference competition. The Pride last earned a victory on April 15, 2019, when they took down William Peace in Raleigh, N.C., by a score of 8-1.

Greensboro does not have an individual with a match win this season.
