Salem Volleyball Hosts Meredith on Wednesday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem volleyball team will play its fourth USA South Conference match of the season on Wednesday, September 29th, when the Spirits welcome Meredith to Varsity Gym at 7 p.m.

The match against the Avenging Angels wraps up the first full month of play for Salem, which remains in search of its first win under head coach Barry Rymer. Salem (0-9, 0-3 USA South) has won six games in its last five matches, including a pair of 3-2 setbacks to Ferrum (Sept. 16) and Pfeiffer (Sept. 21).

Meredith, which is 8-5 on the season and 2-1 in league play, has won three of its last four matches. After posting consecutive wins over Covenant, Methodist and Mary Baldwin, the Avenging Angels dropped a four-set decision to Southern Virginia on Saturday afternoon. Meredith is 3-2 on the road this season.

STATISTICAL LEADERS FOR THE SPIRITS: The Spirits are led on offense by the combination of Valeria Rosa Lopez (134 kills), Brooklyn Snow (74) and Taylor Alleyne (52), resulting in 9.52 kills/set. Teammate Brianna Moore has dished out a team-best 216 assists (6.35 assists/set), helping Salem to accumulated 325 team kills.

Defensively, Lopez has been a key cog for Salem with 168 digs (4.94 digs/set), while Macy Nelson has been a great complement in the back row with 104 digs (3.06 digs/set). On the front row, the trio of Laken Edwards (14 total blocks), Alleyne (13) and Snow (11) lead the way for the Salem defense.

ANALYZING THE AVENGING ANGELS: Meredith has three players with at least 90 kills on the slate, including Whitney Bolton (133) and Lauren Bissette (112) who have reached triple digits. Hailey Long enters Wednesday evening with 90 kills to her credit and is a key part of an offense that has 580 kills. Avery Bowman, with 304 assists (6.47 assists/set), is tops on the team.

The back row tandem of Lauren Phillips (255) and Bowman (118) leads Meredith in digs, while the front row combination of Bissette (36), Sara Dees (29) and Bowman (27) tops the unit in total blocks.

Salem and Meredith will meet for the 14th time since the 2009 season on Wednesday. The Avenging Angels own a 12-1 advantage in the all-time series. The lone Salem win came at Varsity Gym on October 20, 2017, when the Spirits emerged in four sets by scores of 25-17, 27-25, 23-25, 25-22.
