Moore, Snow Post Double Doubles in Salem Volleyball Action

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Brianna Moore and Brooklyn Snow each notched a double-double in a USA South Conference quad match that featured Mary Baldwin, Pfeiffer, Southern Virginia and host Salem at Varsity Gym on Saturday, October 9th. Moore finished with 34 assists and 10 digs, marking her fourth double-double of the slate, while Snow added 12 kills and 12 digs, in a four-set battle with Mary Baldwin in the final match of the afternoon.

Moore handed out a team-high 34 assists and added 10 digs to post her fourth double-double of the season, while Snow came through with 12 kills and 12 digs in Salem's four-set setback to Mary Baldwin in the final match of the day. The Fighting Squirrels posted a 25-16, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23 win at Varsity Gym, improving to 5-14 overall and 1-7 in USA South Conference action.

Valeria Rosa Lopez led the way for Salem (0-11, 0-5 USA South) offensively with 19 kills, while Snow added 12. Nikita Sizemore tallied a team-best 14 digs, while the tandem of Snow (12) and Moore (10) were also active on the back row. Sizemore also made her impression felt on the front row with two assisted blocks, while Brianna Cherry added two for the Spirits.

The Fighting Squirrels jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the first set, keyed by the service game of Soleil Rios Rilon along with a service ace from Alexis Edmonds. Kills by the trio of Lopez, Snow and Alleyne, helped keep the Spirits within striking distance, 18-9, despite five strikes by Mary Baldwin hitters. The Spirits closed to within seven on two occasions down the stretch, but a service ace by Edmonds along with an unforced error completed the nine-point win by the Fighting Squirrels.

The second set witnessed four ties in the first 26 points, including a 13-all deadlock that came by virtue of a service ace from Snow. Snow's dominate service game, coupled with kills from Lopez, allowed Salem to forge ahead 19-14 in the frame. Mary Baldwin trimmed the lead to three, 20-17, following an unforced error, before a block by the duo of Moore and Brianna Cherry put the Spirits within two points of a win. A service error by Sydney Clarke, along with a block by Snow, allowed Salem to knot the match at 1-1 with the three-point win.

In similar fashion to the opening set, Mary Baldwin capitalized on the service games of Savannah Figueroa and Edmonds to establish a 9-4 lead in the early going of the third set. Despite a kill from Snow and unforced errors by the Fighting Squirrels, which trimmed the margin to 9-7, Mary Baldwin managed to extend its lead to six (18-12) at just over the midway point. Lopez drove home two kills and Snow added a pair of her own, but Salem was unable to overcome the early deficit as a kill from Rachel Christian closed the door with a 25-19 win.

Salem regained its focus in the opening of the fourth set and behind Alleyne's service game grabbed an 8-2 lead in the process. A series of slams by Lopez extended the lead to eight, 12-4, before an 8-2 run by the Fighting Squirrels, highlighted by two kills each from Christian and Hannah Myers, made for a 16-12 contest. Cherry and Lopez answered with kills of their own, resulting in a 19-14 lead for Salem, but the Fighting Squirrels retaliated with a 6-1 rally to draw even at 20. Salem managed kills down the stretch by Snow and Lopez, but it was two kills from Christian and three unforced errors that allowed Mary Baldwin to earn the win.

Southern Virginia 3, Salem 0

Sydney Hopkin powered home 10 kills while Breanna Clyde recorded nine and Courtney Pinkston came through with seven as Southern Virginia opened the quad match with a decisive 25-23, 25-20, 25-11 victory over Salem at Varsity Gym.

Southern Virginia (15-3, 7-1 USA South) closed with 45 kills and a .218 attack percentage, as Ellie Warnick handed out 35 assists to seven hitters that finished with at least three kills for the Knights. Emma Steiger led the way for the back row with 16 digs, while Ella Burrows added two assisted blocks and one solo block for the front row.

Valeria Rosa Lopez and Brooklyn Snow, who finished with seven and five kills, respectively, provided the offensive punch for Salem, which slipped to 0-10 overall and 0-4 in league play. Snow was also active with nine digs, while Lopez added eight and Macy Nelson came through with seven.

After trading runs in the early going of the first set, resulting in a 5-5 tie, Southern Virginia capitalized on the service game of Steiger to move in front 10-6. Lopez came through with two kills in the next five points as Salem cut the margin to 12-10. The Knights were unable to distance themselves from Salem, which used timely kills by Snow and Alleyne, to make for a 19-16 contest. Salem emerged from a late timeout by the Knights and knotted the game at 20-all, before two kills each by Warnick and Courtney Pinkston resulted in a 25-23 Southern Virginia victory.

The back-and-forth battle continued into the second set, which saw three ties in the first six points. Southern Virginia grabbed the lead, with Julia Monson in serve, as streaked out to a 13-7 advantage. Salem answered with kills from Lopez and Sizemore, trimming the deficit to 16-12 at just over the midway point. Slams by Snow, along with an assisted block from Alleyne and Lopez, kept the Spirits within striking distance, 20-16. Hopkin added three kills down the stretch to help the Knights assume the 2-0 lead with a five-point victory.

With the opportunity to close out its 10th three-set match of the season, Southern Virginia opened the third set on a 10-3 run, forcing the Spirits to burn their first time. Lopez and Alleyne added kills out of the timeout, but the Knights stretched their lead to 14-6. The service games of Pinkston, Steiger and Monson proved to be insurmountable as the Knights closed out the 25-11 victory and completed the three-game sweep.

Salem will return to the court on Tuesday evening when the Spirits head to Averett for a 7 p.m. match in Danville, Va.
