WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem volleyball team wraps up a week that included four USA South Conference matches by heading to Greensboro, N.C., to clash with league foes N.C. Wesleyan and Greensboro as part of a tri-match on Saturday, October 16th.
Salem (0-13, 0-7 USA South) began its week with a clash against Averett on Tuesday evening before squaring off against Pfeiffer on Thursday. Both the Cougars and Falcons emerged with a 3-0 victory against Salem.
SALEM PAIR NOTCH DOUBLE DOUBLES VERSUS PFEIFFER: Valeria Rosa Lopez capped off her eighth double-double of the slate with 17 digs and 11 kills for the Spirits, who remain winless in 13 matches and seven league contests. Brooklyn Snow also had a solid performance for the Spirits (10 kills / 11 digs), her fourth double-double of the slate, as Brianna Moore handed out 19 assists and Dania Shoaf dished out 10 assists.
Lopez led the defense with 17 digs and Macy Nelson added 12 for Salem. The front row of Brianna Cherry (four assisted blocks), Laken Edwards (three) and Taylor Alleyne (two) also made their presence felt.
Pfeiffer's offensive trio of Madison Honeycutt, Morgan Shrader and Reagan Wyatt combined for 27 of the team's 42 kills, which helped the Falcons earn a hard-fought three-set victory over Salem (25-19, 26-24, 25-18) in USA South Conference volleyball action at Varsity Gym on Thursday evening.
THINGS TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND: Valeria Rosa Lopez sits one kill shy of 100 in USA South Conference play heading into the weekend, averaging 3.96 kills/set. Lopez also needs five digs to reach the 100-dig plateau on the season, averaging 3.80 digs/set through the first seven matches.
Brooklyn Snow has been a major component of the Salem offense with 74 kills, while handing out 71 digs along the way. Brianna Moore leads the unit with 178 assists, while Brianna Cherry and Taylor Alleyne have 13 total blocks apiece for the Spirits' front row.
GREENSBORO: The Pride are 12-10 overall and 4-6 in USA South Conference action entering the weekend. Greensboro has dropped three of its last four matches with the lone win (3-1) coming against Methodist on October 9th.
In USA South play, Carly Uhlir leads the way with 89 total kills (2.34 kills/set), while Mckenzie Norris is tops in assists with 294. Three members of The Pride—Uhlir (128), Lauren Kunke (121) and Lauren Mantel (120)—guide the team in digs, while Natalie Rosinski anchors the front row attack with 36 total blocks (15 solo blocks).
N.C. WESLEYAN: N.C. Wesleyan heads to Greensboro with a 13-9 record overall and a 4-6 mark in league play. The Battling Bishops have lost four straight, dating back to a four-set loss to Pfeiffer on October 5th. The only wins in the month came at Randolph (Oct. 1) and Mary Baldwin (Oct. 2), both by 3-0 margins.
The trio of Lauren Weaver (101), Michaela Seawell (92) and Sydney Barnwell (84) have been the focal point of the offense during USA South play by leading the team in kills. Setter Sloan Martin has facilitated this success with 339 assists. Meanwhile, defensively, N.C. Wesleyan is led by Kira Kristjanson (140 digs) and Weaver (27 total blocks).
