Lopez Tallies 10 Kills, Nine Digs in Dig Pink Match Versus Meredith

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The pair of Whitney Bolton and Avery Bowman tallied nine kills apiece while Lauren Phillips accounted for 22 digs, as Meredith capped off its 10th USA South win of the season with a 25-13, 25-18, 25-16 victory over Salem at Varsity Gym on Tuesday evening.

Salem (0-17, 0-11 USA South) was led offensively by Valeria Rosa Lopez (10 kills) and Taylor Alleyne (six), while Brooklyn Snow finished with 11 assists and six digs. Macy Nelson led the way with 13 digs, while Lopez came through with six and Moore contributed six. Both Alleyne and Lopez had two assisted blocks.

Meredith (16-6, 10-2 USA South) and Salem reached a three-all deadlock early in the first, but the Avenging Angels put together an 11-3 run, keyed by Bailey Lucas in serve, to move in front by eight. The tandem of Laken Edwards and Brianna Cherry combined for a block for the Spirits, but it would not deter the Meredith offense which used a pair of Bolton kills to move in front 20-10. Kills down the stretch by Lopez and Nikita Sizemore were not enough as Meredith prevailed by 12 points.

Salem established a 5-1 lead in the second, but Meredith rallied behind Bowman in serve to draw even at five. The Avenging Angels regained their rhythm, using kills by Bolton, Hailey Long and Lauren Bissette, to grab a 13-8 advantage along the way. Nelson and Lopez came through with timely kills for the Spirits, but it was Bolton's kills and Bowman's service aces that stretch the Meredith lead to 22-13. Salem pulled to within six late in the set, with Snow in serve, before the Avenging Angels assumed the 2-0 lead with a seven-point victory.

Bowman came through with two service aces in the early stage of the third set as Meredith constructed a 6-2 lead. Salem answered with kills from Lopez and Snow, keeping within three, before a series of strikes by Bissette put the Avenging Angels into double figures, 11-6. Lopez delivered a kill to keep the Spirits within four, 13-9, but Meredith retaliated by scoring six of the next 10 points to assume the six-point lead. The Avenging Angels eventually extended their lead to eight, 22-14, and kills from Snow and Cherry were not enough as Meredith wrapped up the match with a nine-point victory.

The same two teams clash in Raleigh, N.C. on Thursday, October 21st at 7 p.m.
