Salem, Brevard Clash in USA South Match on Tuesday

Opponent:
Salem vs. Brevard | October 3 | Winston-Salem, N.C. | 4 p.m. | Varsity Field

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPIRITS
Salem goalkeeper Mireya Sanchez tallied the second-most saves (19) in program history as the Spirits fell 3-0 in a USA South Conference match at Methodist on Saturday afternoon.

Sanchez reached her single-match career-high in saves, three shy of the program record, just three days after teammate Marissa Doutrich set the mark against Southern Virginia. Sanchez converted 11 in the opening half and followed with eight in the second.

The Spirits offense was led by Darilyn Nieto, who attempted five shots, including one shot on goal. Teammate Nathaly Berrezueta returned from an injury to attempted one shot, as did Layla Locklear and Giselle Ramos. Both Locklear and Ramos had one shot on goal for the Spirits apiece.

Methodist, the 2022 USA South Conference regular season and tournament champions, posted 39 shots (22 shots on goal) over the match. A total of 12 Monarchs had at least two shots in the contest, including Lola Campbell, who tallied a match-best six. Campbell had three shots on goal, one shy of a team-high, which belonged to Yaneli Sanchez.

Corrine Shovlain put the first goal on the board in the opening minute, driving home a pass from Sanchez. The two teamed up again four minutes later, in the fifth-minute, when Sanchez took a Shovlain goal to the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage.

Sanchez recorded her third, and the final goal of the match, in the 15th-minute, following a series of assists from Cameron Acevdeo and Maddie Hernandez.

Kaylea Carter picked up the win in net for the Monarchs, recording three saves.

Salem finished the day with four shots in both the first and second half, while Methodist attempted 22 in the opening half and 17 in the second.

FOURTH TIME WITH AT LEAST TWO TIES
With ties during a four-day span from September 15-19, the 2023 Salem soccer team became the fourth unit in program history to have at least two ties in a single season. The others came in 2011, 2013 and 2022.

The 2011 unit became the first team with multiple ties in a single season, finishing in a double overtime scoreless deadlock with Ferrum (Sept. 23) and one-all tie with Covenant (Oct. 18).

Two years later, in 2013, Salem had consecutive matches with 1-1 ties at both Meredith (Sept. 11) and Methodist (Sept. 14). This marked the only time in program history that Salem has had ties in back-to-back matches.

The most recent season with multiple ties was 2022, where the Spirits knotted both Meredith (Oct. 8) and Greensboro (Oct. 29). The clash with the Avenging Angels came with both units scoring two goals, while Greensboro's match in late October was scoreless.

LOOKING TO BECOME THE FIFTH
In Salem's match with Agnes Scott, sophomore Darilyn Nieto netted her ninth goal of the 2023 season. With her next goal, Nieto will become the fifth player in program history to score at least 10 goals in multiple seasons in her career as a Spirit.

Nieto, who tallied 14 goals in her rookie campaign of 2022, will join Tia Bringhurst, Brooke Bukas, Sawyer Ferguson and Jordan Lanier as the only Spirits to reach double figure goals in multiple season. Three of those players (Bukas, Ferguson and Lanier) had at least 10 goals in three separate seasons.

Coincidentally, Nieto tied Bringhurst for ninth-most goals in a Salem career with 23. She is two shy of Ellie Montes for eighth on the all-time list (25) and three away from tying Tarryn Johnson and Taylor Norman, who are deadlocked for sixth-most career goals (26) in Salem soccer history.

GOALKEEPING RECORDS FALL VERSUS SOUTHERN VIRGINIA, METHODIST

The goaltending pair of Marissa Doutrich and Mireya Sanchez placed themselves first and second, respectively, in program history with a series of solid performances last week.

Salem goalkeeper Marissa Doutrich etched her name in the Salem soccer record book with a 22-save performance in a 5-0 setback against USA South Conference rival Southern Virginia on Wednesday evening in Buena Vista, Va.

Doutrich topped the previous single-match high by seven, which was originally set by Jazmine Bridgeman on October 10, 2009 versus Maryville. Both Taylor Barcom (Covenant / Oct. 18, 2011) and Richi Hutchins (Lynchburg / Oct. 12, 2014) equaled the mark by Bridgeman over the course of the next five years.

Salem, which tallied 23 saves as a unit, had 10 saves in the first half and 13 more in the second frame.

On Saturday, in a clash with defending USA South Conference regular season and tournament champions Methodist, Mireya Sanchez tallied the second-most saves (19) in program history as the Spirits fell 3-0. Sanchez reached her single-match career-high in saves, three shy of the program record, after recording 11 in the first half and nine more in the second frame.

ALL-TIME SERIES WITH BREVARD
Brevard leads the all-time series against Salem with a 2-1-0 record after posting a 1-0 victory in Western North Carolina on October 19, 2022.

RECAPPING LAST OUTING VERSUS TORNADOS: Salem senior netminder Jordan Tomberlin took over between the pipes in the second half, making a team-high five saves, but it was a first half goal off the foot of Grace Black that allowed USA South Conference foe Brevard to claim a 1-0 victory at Imes-Level Family Field on Wednesday, October 19th.

Tomberlin and the Salem defense faced 15 shots from the Tornados in the second half, including five shots on goal in the frame. It is the seventh time in the 2022 season that Tomberlin has finished a match with five saves and third against a USA South Conference opponent.

Starting goalkeeper Alexcina Wartski (1-2-0) made three saves for the Spirits, surrendering the attempt by Black in the 17th-minute. Black's goal came by virtue of a pass from teammate Abby Mayer.

Three of those shots came from first year forward Darilyn Nieto, while the quartet of Sarah Salinas, Olivia Nivens, Ashley Linden and Alyson Gammons had one shot each.
