Volleyball upsets Piedmont before falling in quarterfinals

Maryville, TN-The Salem College volleyball team concluded its impressive season last night in the USA South quarterfinals. Salem was picked seventh in the USA South West Division pre-season coach's poll, but defied odds by finishing sixth and then upsetting the third seeded Lions of Piedmont in the first round of the tournament. Salem finishes their season with a 13-18 overall record, which is more than three times their win total in 2015.

In the first round match, Salem upset the Lions in convincing style 3-0 (25-23, 27-25, 25-23). Mariah Sharon played stellar defense with 21 digs. Hannah Delcamp led the Spirits with set assists, and she also provided 13 digs. Bernisha Master had 4 blocks for Salem, while Taylor Moulton led the Spirits with 13 kills.

The Scots of Maryville were able to win 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-21) over Salem in the quarterfinals match on their home court. Moulton led the team with 8 kills, while Delcamp had 18 assists. Sharon led the team with 15 digs. Ashlen Rector, Salem's only senior, finished her career with 12 total digs in the two matches.
