The Salem Department of Athletics capped off its 2023-24 athletic season with a banquet held in Varsity Gym, located on the Salem Campus, on Thursday, April 25th. The banquet honored the student-athletes for their individual contributions over the course of the year.
This week, from April 1-6, the NCAA national office is celebrating NCAA Division III week. We in Salem College Athletics will be doing the same, to honor our student-athletes and their contributions to the program, campus community as well as the region, nation and world.
The completion of the 2023 fall semester saw 39 student-athletes earn Dean’s List honors at Salem College. A student must maintain a minimum 3.5 grade point average in a minimum of 12 courses to earn this distinction.
The trio of Anna Rymer, Ashlyn Wood and Valeria Rosa Lopez were named to the 2023 Academic All-District Volleyball Team, selected by College Sports Communicators.
Fittingly, Salem senior Valeria Rosa Lopez capped off what proved to be the final match of her collegiate career as the team leader in kills (seven), while sophomore Aspen Bradley came through with six.
The trio of Macy Nelson (All-Sportsmanship), Anna Rymer (Second Team All-Conference) and Valeria Rosa Lopez (Second Team All-Conference) were recognized as top performers in 2023 according to a vote from the league’s head coaches.
For the second time in as many seasons the Salem volleyball team will head to the USA South Conference Tournament Semifinals. Salem will make the trip back to the North Carolina capital, Raleigh, to square off with Meredith on Thursday evening at 7 p.m.
Junior Anna Rymer came through with a clutch performance for Salem volleyball as she singlehandedly scored five of the final seven points of the match, leading the cardiac Spirits to their sixth consecutive five-set win, which came over William Peace by scores of 23-25, 25-16, 17-25, 25-17, 15-12.
Salem will make its sixth all-time appearance at the USA South Conference Tournament on Tuesday evening when the Spirits make their 103-mile trek to William Peace. The match will mark the first-ever postseason meeting between Salem and the Pacers.

Salem sophomore Ashlyn Wood delivered a match point service ace that completed not only a fifth-set comeback, but also a come-from-behind victory as the Spirits earned a 18-25, 16-25, 25-20, 33-31, 15-13 thriller over USA South Conference rival Southern Virginia on Wednesday evening at Varsity Gym.
Anna Rymer emphatically left her mark on two Salem victories at the conclusion of Saturday afternoon’s tri-match at Pfeiffer, combining for 36 kills and a .403 attack percentage, as the Spirits earned a four-set win over the host Falcons (25-23, 27-25, 24-26, 25-14) and a come-from-behind five-set triumph (13-25, 27-29, 25-23, 25-18, 17-15) over Bob Jones, which moved the Spirits to 19-9 overall on the season.
Salem received a pair of double-digit kill performances from the duo of Anna Rymer (14) and Aspen Bradley (13), but it was 15 kills each from the Methodist tandem of Jeanana Fowler and Savannah Hovander that proved to be the difference as the Monarchs posted a 25-23, 25-22, 25-21 victory over Salem in a USA South Conference battle at the March F. Riddle Center.

Salem senior Valeria Rosa Lopez broke a 13-year record with 27, while the Spirits set the program mark for assists (76), kills (79) and Aspen Bradley posts a .378 attack percentage in a five-set win over Methodist.
