Student-Athlete Insights with CoCo

I think the only thing that's actually been consistent in 2020 are all of the unfortunate events that have happened to us collectively. As an athlete who is used to a rigorous and busy schedule with free time long enough to grab a sandwich between classes, consistency has been really difficult. I mean, I sit at my desk, do my homework, join my parents for a meal or two, go back to my desk to do some more work, take a shower, and go to bed. That's my consistent routine. Occasionally I'll do a work out and some self-care, but honestly ever since lacrosse was cancelled I haven't stuck to my schedule. That was about 6 months ago.

Consistency in a pandemic can be really positive or negative, you just have to be very choosy and intentional about what kind of consistency you want or need. If you need to focus on school, pick times during the day where your brain is at optimal functioning capacity and be consistent in that. If you need more self care, be intentional about where and how you want to care for yourself and maybe wash your face every day, do a hair mask every three days, sing to yourself, listen to music everyday for the first 20 minutes after you wake up. Just some ideas for you. Consistency can be harmful in that you're doing the same thing. Every. Single. Day. When I think of negative consistency I think of the book A Wrinkle in Time, where everyone does everything at the same time. To me, there was a very dystopian feel to that. To do the same thing at the time with EVERYONE ELSE? That's not a life worth living.

Just remember that despite the fact that nothing will be the same after this pandemic, you can still be spontaneous and enjoy your life. Call your friend instead of studying for hours. Go to walmart and grab some new nail polish or some snacks and binge watch some Netflix. Relax. Just because the world outside your room seems to be raging and chaotic, doesn't mean you should feel the same way. Be safe, spontaneous and take good care of yourself. Like I said last week, you only get this one life.
