Allie Watkins wins GSAC Softball Pitcher of the Week

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Great South Athletics Conference announced the winter and spring sports Players of the Week for contests played February 17 -23 and, following voting by the league sports information directors, Trinity Washington's Shelby Swan won Women's Basketball Player of the Week, Agnes Scott's Claire Rinaldo claimed Women's Tennis Player of the Week, Salem's Allie Watkins captured Softball Pitcher of the Week and Kat Riale of Agnes Scott won Softball Player of the Week.

GSAC Softball Pitcher of the Week – Allie Watkins of Salem 

Allie Watkins pitched an outstanding game on Saturday as she went 8 innings allowing one earned run on 6 hits in Salem's 3-2 eight inning win over Wilson College. Watkins struck out seven and did not surrender a walk. In her second game against Meredith College she went 7 inning's allowing only one earned run striking out six with no walks allowed in a 3-2 loss.  Overall 15 innings, 13 strikeouts, 0 walks, only 2 earned runs.

GSAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week – Shelby Swan of Trinity Washington

Swan enjoyed an outstanding game last Tuesday, playing a crucial role in the Tigers win versus College of Notre Dame Maryland (85-19). Swan tallied an incredibly efficient 25 points, six assists, and six steals. Twelve of her points came from behind the arc as her 3-point shooting was 80 percent. In the win, Swan scored almost 30 percent of the Tigers total points.

GSAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week – Claire Rinaldo of Agnes Scott

Agnes Scott junior Claire Rinaldo remains undefeated in singles after facing Covenant College last weekend. Rinaldo defeated Gretchen Rowe in the number two spot 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 to earn one of the three Scottie points in the 6-3 defeat.

GSAC Softball Player of the Week – Kat Riale of Agnes Scott

Scotties junior catcher Kat Riale had a strong performance in the batters box and behind the plate in four games this weekend. The Scotties won both games against Maryville on Saturday and won both games against Rust College on Sunday. In total, Riale batted a .636 batting average on the weekend (.571 vs Maryville, .750 vs Rust). In her at bats, Riale had one walk and 7 hits, including one double and two triples. She scored 7 runs and drove in 8 RBI's, including one stolen base. Behind the plate, Riale threw out two runners caught stealing second base and picked off one runner off first base. 

 

The GSAC sports information directors nominate Player of the Week candidates and then vote on the top two nominees in each sport as selected by the conference office. Player of the Week voting occurs on Tuesdays and the weekly announcement of the winners is released each Wednesday morning.
