Softball loses first home doubleheader against Guilford

Winston-Salem, NC- The Salem College softball team hung tough with a talented Guilford team today at home, but they could not avoid the sweep. Guilford won the 1st game 7-2. The Spirits went on an impressive rally in game 2, but Guilford hung on for a 7-4 win. Morgan Coleman (Colfax, NC) went 4 for 6 from the plate today to lead the Spirits. Salem fall to 1-7 this season, while the Quakers improve to 11-1.

Guilford jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first game in the 1st inning. They scored 1 in the 5th, and took a 7-0 lead in the top of the sixth. The Spirits put 2 runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth, but it wasn't enough.

The 2nd game was much tighter. Salem struck first in the bottom of the 1st with a 1 run inning. Guilford climbed on top with runs in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings to take a 4-1 lead. Salem scored 1 in the 4th and 2 in the 5th to knot up the score. Guilford was able to score 3 runs in the top of the 7th to earn the win. 

Amber Bass (Clinton, NC) had 3 hits in the 2 games for Salem. Kayla Kennedy (Goldsboro, NC) led the Spirits with 2 runs. Allie Watkins (Locust, NC) had 2 runs batted in for Salem.

The Spirits return home on Wednesday when they host Emory & Henry at 3:00 and 5:00.
