Softball splits first two games of season in Raleigh

Raleigh, NC-The Salem College softball team split two games in Raleigh today to open up their season. The Spirits held off Wilson of Pennsylvania with a 3-2 win in the 11:00 game in 8 innings. They fell 8-7 in their second game against Hood. Salem and Hood are now 1-1, while Wilson is 0-2.

The stats from the Wilson game will be posted later. 

Salem stormed out to a 5-0 lead against Hood in the second game in the first inning. Hood chipped away at Salem's lead with a run in the second and one in the fourth inning. They scored 6 in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-5 lead. Jenna VanHorn (Goldsboro, NC) scored for Salem in the 6th to cut the lead to 8-6. Lauryn Smith (King, NC) scored in the 7th to make it 8-7, but the Spirits could not get their eighth run to tie the score. 

Morgan Coleman (Colfax, NC) and Allie Watkins (Locust, NC) each had 2 runs batted in. to lead the Spirits. Smith led the team with 2 hits and a run. Coleman pitched the majority of the game for Salem.

The Spirits play two more games tomorrow in Raleigh against Neumann at 12:00 and Meredith at 2:00.
