Brown Named Spirits’ Assistant Basketball Coach

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Salem head coach Quntashea Lewis announced the addition of Essence Brown as the team's assistant coach on Wednesday, Dec. 11.

Prior to coming to Salem, Brown served as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. In her first season with the Dolphins, the program was responsible for five victories in the Skyline Conference. Among the six total wins in 2018-19, the College of Mount Saint Vincent came through with back-to-back wins over Yeshiva (74-58) and St. Joseph's—Long Island (63-55).

Brown's work with the 2019-20 College of Mount Saint Vincent unit has resulted in a 5-2 mark, including consecutive triumphs over Randolph (69-50), John Jay (66-65) and Yeshiva (64-45).

In addition to her role at the College of Mount Saint Vincent, Brown was also the 15U head coach for the Brick City Elite AAU program in Newark, N.J.

Her first position in collegiate athletics came in the 2017-18 campaign, where she served as the assistant coach at Concordia College in Bronxville, N.Y. The Clippers emerged with four wins over the course of the slate, all of which came in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. The triumphs came over the likes of Felician (72-61), Wilmington (Del.) (75-72), Nyack (54-51), Holy Family (72-65).

Brown also gained valuable basketball experience in the private sector as the director of basketball at Benswic Inc. in New York, N.Y. She was also a basketball coach, trainer and counselor for Fastbreak Sports in New York, N.Y. Along with those positions she was the head coach for Nightingale-Bamford School in New York.

Brown earned her bachelor of science degree in sports management from Post University in Waterbury, Conn., in May 2016.
