Salem, Greensboro Clash on Wednesday Evening

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem basketball team will take part in its third game in a four-day stretch on Wednesday, Jan. 8, when the Spirits head to the Gate City for a clash with USA South Conference foe Greensboro at 7 p.m.

The Spirits (0-12, 0-5 USA South) remain in search of their first win of the 2019-20 campaign after suffering a series of setbacks at home over the weekend to Meredith (71-46) and Mary Baldwin (77-56). Meanwhile, Greensboro is 6-3 on the season and 3-0 in league action, after posting consecutive victories against Averett (71-53), Meredith (65-58) and Methodist (71-49) since Dec. 14.

Salem, averaging 56 points per contest versus USA South foes, is led offensively by the tandem of Alize Brooks and Sydney Bowen. The Spirit backcourt, separated by one point in scoring on the season, are the only two Salem players to reach the 100-point mark (Brooks-141, Bowen-140). While Bowen leads the way in field goals made (53-146) and 3-pointers (20-59), Brooks has knocked down 49-of-149 field goals and 30-of-59 free throws in 2019-20.

In the post, Salem has received 103 rebounds (67 defensive) from sophomore Lauren Privette. Teammate Aubrey Slaughter, who notched her second double-double of the slate on Sunday against Mary Baldwin, finishing with 16 rebounds and 12 points, has the second-most rebounds (94) due in large part to 65 defensive boards.

The duo of Katie Lewis (138 points) and Ashley Free (114) lead the way for the Greensboro offense, which is averaging 64.8 points per game (583 points) through the first nine games of the season. The Pride have four players on the roster with at least 45 rebounds, including Diajah Hickson, who leads the way with 58. She is closely followed by Lewis (49), Destiny Timberlake (48) and Sabria Joseph (45).
