Spirits Return To Court, Face Emory & Henry on Wednesday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Four days after capturing a six-point victory over Virginia Wesleyan at Varsity Gym, the Salem basketball team will take on its third Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent of the season, when it makes the trek to Emory, Va., for a 7 p.m. contest against Emory & Henry.

Salem (1-1) is led in scoring by the trio of Tyler Davenport (31 points), Alize Brooks (19) and Dionne Sampson (19). Davenport leads the way in assists (five) and field goals made, nine, converting 13-of-16 (81.3%) of her free throw attempts along the way. She came through with a game-high 21 points in the last contest against Virginia Wesleyan, marking her the fifth time in her Salem career that she has topped at least 20 points.

The Spirits are led in rebounds by first year Tamsi Echendu, who has 14 rebounds, including 11 defensive boards. Davenport has also been a force on the glass with 12 rebounds, while Lauren Privette has pulled down 12.

RECAPPING WIN OVER MARLINS: Tyler Davenport scored a game-high 21 points while teammates Alize Brooks and Dionne Sampson added 13 and 10 points, respectively, to help guide Salem to a 73-67 victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, November 13th at Varsity Gym in Winston-Salem. The six-point win marked the first in the coaching career of Salem's Quntashea Lewis.

Davenport knocked down 7-of-12 field goals from the floor, while hitting 7-of-8 from the free throw line, while grabbing six rebounds along the way. Brooks reached double figures after hitting 4-of-11 from the floor and 5-of-9 at the charity stripe. Sampson was top scorer among reserves after knocking down 4-of-8 from the floor, including a long distance 3-pointer.

Salem had 46 rebounds in the game, receiving eight from Tamsi Echendu and six each from Davenport and Kyana Thomas. Thomas also added six points, scoring four from the free throw line. Salem wrapped up the game hitting 25-of-57 (43.9%) from the floor and was successful on 21-of-32 (65.6%) at the free throw line.

ANALYZING THE WASPS: Emory & Henry enters Wednesday with a 1-1 mark, suffering a setback to Queens University on Sunday afternoon. The Wasps opened the season with back-to-back exhibition losses to NCAA Division I opponents Radford (93-37) and Western Carolina (72-48).

The lone win of the season came at Bridgewater, where the Wasps capitalized on a 9-2 run to open the fourth quarter for the first win of the slate.

Emma Santoro leads the way on offense for Emory & Henry with 29 points while Alexis Hoppers and Taylor Owens have scored 29 and 24 points, respectively. Hoppers tops the unit in rebounding with 17, snagging 11 on the defensive end, while Santoro is second with 16.

Wednesday marks the fifth all-time meeting between the Wasps and Salem. Emory & Henry leads by a 3-1 margin, but Salem captured the last meeting by a 59-49 margin on January 7, 2014.
