Vladimery Nets Three Goals in Season Opener for Spirits

LAURINBURG, N.C. – Salem's junior midfielder Collette Vladimery netted a team-high three goals, but it was the combination of Shania Johnson (five goals), Skii Bollinger (five), Kara Cheers (four) and Kelsey Houser (three) that made the difference as St. Andrews emerged with a 19-5 victory women's lacrosse action in Laurinburg, N.C. on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Vladimery, who attempted eight shots on the afternoon, was also active on defense with five ground balls and two caused turnovers. On offense, Vladimery handed out one of Salem's (0-1) two assist in the match. The Spirits received their remaining two goals from the combination of Sara Jimenez and Teia Horton, who tallied one each.

Cara James led the way for the Spirits in ground balls, snagging eight, while forcing a pair of turnovers. She was successful on four draw controls and was responsible for an assist. Salem's Hannah Ostlund closed the match with 12 saves, while her counterpart at St. Andrews, Olivia Bartlett, tallied seven.

The Spirits notched their first goal of the season at the 29:27 mark when Vladimery found an open Jimenez for the early 1-0 lead. St. Andrews answered by scoring the next six goals, including two from Johnson, to forge in front 6-1 at the 18:59 mark.

Vladimery drove home an unassisted goal just over a minute later, but the Knights stretched their lead to 12-2 with six goals in a seven-minute span. Four of the goals came from Bollinger.

Horton got Salem on the board first in the second half, netting her first goal of the season at the 27:44 mark. The Knights responded with strikes by Johnson and Cheers, moving the margin to 14-3, but back-to-back goals by Vladimery at the 18:37 and 17:08 marks, trimmed the deficit to nine.

Cheers and Houser netted two goals each over the final 11:48 of the contest, accounting for four of the Knights' five goals in that stretch, allowed St. Andrews to pick up its third win in the series with the Spirits.
