Horton Nets Three Goals, James Two Versus Sweet Briar

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Kaylah Bailey netted a game-high five goals and was one of two Sweet Briar players with at least one assist as the Vixens picked up their first win in the all-time series with Salem, 11-9, on Sunday, March 1 at Varsity Field in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Bailey, who attempted seven shots on goal for Sweet Briar (1-4), was also active on defense with five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Joining her with multi-goal performances was K. Mullins (three) and Victoria Lawson, who closed with two. The Vixens were led in goal by Sydney Campbell, who moved to 1-2 on the season after converting seven saves, including four in the opening half.

The Spirits (1-2) were led offensively by the trio of Teia Horton (three goals), Cara James (two) and Anzley Kemmerer (two). James made her presence felt on both ends of the field for Salem, recording 12 ground balls and nine caused turnovers, while teammate Hope Morrison contributed six ground balls and an assist.

Hannah Ostlund (1-2) finished with nine saves for Salem, including five in the second half.

James provided Salem with the early 1-0 lead in the contest, driving a shot past Campbell at the 25:50 mark. Sweet Briar answered by notching the next four goals, including two from K. Mullins, assuming a 4-1 advantage on a strike from Victoria Lawson at 12:21.

Horton scored a free position attempt for Salem at the 11:11 mark, slicing the lead to 4-2, but back-to-back goals from Mullins and Bailey stretched the Vixens' lead to 6-2. Kemmerer recorded her first goal of the game with 1:20 on the clock, cutting the Sweet Briar lead to three at the intermission.

Lawson found the back of the net again at the 27:39 mark of the second half, providing the Vixens with a 7-3 advantage. Morrison and James attempted to kick start the Salem offense with goals just 16 seconds apart, but Sweet Briar answered with strikes by Zerah Chase and Bailey to provide a four-point cushion, 9-5.

Danielle Allen scored the sixth goal of the day for Salem at the 21:25 mark and Kemmerer followed with a strike with 18:53, cutting the Vixens' margin to two, 9-7. With just under 10 minutes remaining, Bailey took advantage of a pass from Lawson, to put Sweet Briar in front 10-7. She added her final goal of the game at the 8:13 mark, providing the Vixens with an 11-8 edge.

Horton accounted for the final two Salem goals of the afternoon, including a man-up goal at the 6:40 mark.
