James Named USA South Defensive POW

ROME, Ga. – For the second time in as many weeks and the third time in program history a member of the Salem lacrosse team earned USA South Player of the Week honors. The league's Defensive Player of the Week honor for the week of March 2 went to sophomore Cara James.

In clashes with Southern Virginia (Feb. 28) and Sweet Briar (March 1), James combined for 14 ground balls, 10 caused turnovers, nine draw controls and two goals. Her week began with two ground balls and one caused turnover against Southern Virginia on Friday evening.

Two days later, in the second home game of the season for Salem, James was the catalyst for the defensive unit with 12 ground balls, nine caused turnovers and eight draw controls. The 12 ground balls established a single-game career-high for James, whose previous career mark was eight against Methodist on April 9, 2019.

James more than doubled her previous single-game career-high (four) in caused turnovers with nine against the Vixens on Sunday afternoon. Her previous career-best was against N.C. Wesleyan on April 3, 2019.

Offensively, James enjoyed the second multi-goal game of her career with a pair of strikes against Sweet Briar. She began her day with a goal at the 25:50 mark of the opening frame, giving Salem an early 1-0 lead. James tacked on her second goal of the game at the 26:19 mark of the second, which trimmed the Vixen lead to 7-5.

"Cara is the type of player who always has her eyes open," said Salem head coach Emma Rose. "She is always looking to help her teammates and make big plays. We are proud of her accomplishments this week."

On Feb. 24, the Salem lacrosse team received its first-ever USA South Player of the Week honors on when the duo of Collette Vladimery (Defensive Player of the Week) and Sara Jimenez (Freshman of the Week) were recognized by the league following a 16-15 overtime victory over Randolph College on Saturday, Feb. 22.

Salem returns to action on Tuesday, March 3, when the Spirits head to USA South Conference rival Greensboro for a 3:30 p.m. clash at Pride Field. For more information on Salem lacrosse check out www.salemspirits.com.
