DREAM SEASON EQUALS CHAMPIONSHIP!

Washington, DC- The Salem College Soccer Team was crowned the 2007 Association of Division III Independents Atlantic Region Women’s Champions Saturday afternoon as the Spirits shutout Green Mountain College 2-0. The championship game was held at the Gallaudet Soccer Stadium in Washington, DC.

Fans were entertained by a closely-contested first half as the two teams went into halftime in a scoreless tie. Ten minutes into the second half, Liz Clem (FY, Merced, CA) scored the game-winning goal. With ten minutes remaining in the game, Tori Collier (So., Raleigh, NC) was fouled inside the goalie box. Kim Wisen (FY, Madison, OH) took the penalty kick and scored Salem’s second goal of the game. Goalkeeper Brittany Tedrick (FY, Bativia, OH) started the championship game and had three saves in the first 20 minutes. Andrea Baldwin (FY, Hudson, NC) then took over the goalkeeping duties for the final 70 minutes and recorded 6 saves. This shutout was the 11th of the season by Salem College’s goalkeepers.

Green Mountain College’s Van Hartless recorded 12 saves as the Spirits out shot their opponents 14-9. Each team had 7 corner kicks for the game.

 

Salem College finished the 2007 season with a 15-1-2 record, a school record that will be hard to beat. The Spirits had only won one game in the previous two seasons. With 13 new recruits, Head Coach Jay Callahan turned the soccer program around in just one season. Green Mountain College finished the season with a 9-11 record.
