Salem Captures 12th Victory

October 10, 2007

Winston-Salem, NC- Salem College hosted Ferrum College in a non-conference soccer match on the beautiful Wednesday afternoon at Blixt Field. It was Senior Night for Shandon Mahnken (Carmarillo, CA) as the history major was playing in her final home game for the Spirits. Coach Jay Callahan presented roses to Mahnken before the game with Shandon’s mom by her side.

The game was closely contested with both defenses turning back numerous attacks. Salem’s Tara Madden (FY, Greenville, SC) finally scored at 37:10 off a beautiful assist by Tori Collier (So., Raleigh, NC). Later on in the game, several Salem shots banged off the goal posts as the Spirit offense finally caught its breath at halftime. It was evident that Salem was playing in their 3rd game in just four games. The defense held Ferrum scoreless as Andrea Baldwin (FY, Hudson, NC) recorded her 8th shutout of the season and her 4th straight.  Today’s 1-0 victory raised Salem’s record to 12-0-2.

“I was very proud of the team” said Coach Callahan. “Each and every player fought through fatigue after their 3rd game in four days. Collier provided a great assist to Madden in the first half. Tara had several other close shots in the second half. I was very please that we closed our home season with a perfect 7-0 record, especially since we were 0-8 at home in 2006.”

The Spirits return to action on Saturday, October 20, as they travel to Georgia to play Spelman College in Atlanta.
