Winston-Salem, NC-Tatum Justice, Michala Michaux, and Julie Piernikowski were honored with the highest awards in the Salem Athletic Department during the department’s recent end-of-the-year celebration.

Justice was awarded as the Anne Woodward Student-Athlete of the Year. This award is presented to the Salem College athlete who has achieved team and individual greatness during the 2009-2010 year.  The person is nominated by coaches and voted on by the athletic department staff.

Justice (Jacksonville, NC) was a Great South First Team All-Conference Soccer Team Selection. She played the first twelve games of the season as a central defender and helped the soccer team hold their opponents to less than one goal in those games. She was switched to center forward for the last eight games, and scored six goals including three game winners in that stretch. She had a major impact in the team’s successful 12-7-1 season.

Michaux (Morganton, NC) was awarded with the Jess-Byrd Scholar Athlete Award. This award is presented to a graduating senior who for four years has attained a strong academic record and exhibited qualities of sportsmanship, athletic ability and leadership. The award is named in honor of Jess Byrd ’27, a distinguished Leham Professor of English (1937-1967) and a strong advocate for the academic advancement of women.

Michaux has been a two-year soccer captain, and she was also a two-year basketball captain. She started every match in her four years on the soccer team. Michaux holds many records on the basketball team including most assists in a game and most steals in a season. She is the only athlete in Salem College history to compete for four years on three separate teams: tennis, basketball, and soccer.

Piernikowski (Potomac, MD) was selected as the Scholar Athlete of the Year. This award is presented to a student-athlete letter winner that is a sophomore, junior, or senior and has the best cumulative grade point average.

Piernikowski was the number one overall runner for the cross country team for the majority of the year, and also was selected to the Great South All-Conference team. This is the second year in a row that Piernikowski has been honored with this award. She helped lead the cross country team to a second place finish in the GSAC XC Championships.
