Maryville, TN-The Salem College soccer team almost pulled off one of the biggest victories in Great South Athletic Conference history by taking Maryville College to overtime at Maryville yesterday. Jordan Chase scored the winning goal for Maryville in the second minute of overtime to provide the 1-0 win for the Scots. Salem falls to 5-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Great South, while Maryville improves to 2-0 in the GSAC and 5-2-2 overall.

Maryville entered the game with a 111 game unbeaten streak in the GSAC, which is one of the longest conference streaks of its kind in NCAA history. The Spirits battled back and forth with the Scots through two halves of soccer. Amanda Orsino (Sauqouit, NY), Sabrina Thiel (Hillsboro, OH), and Anna Trakas (Tryon, NC) each had solid attempts on goal for Salem. Taylor Barcom (Anchorage, AK) finished with 9 saves in goal. The defense of the Spirits was very key in the effort by holding Maryville scoreless for 92 minutes.

"Maryville has a tremendous women's soccer program, coached by one of the winningest coaches in NCAA Division III history. The effort our team put out on their home turf was tremendous. We have a very tough road with the remaining teams from the GSAC, but hopefully we will get one more shot at Maryville in the tournament before they head to the USA South," said Head Coach Jay Callahan.

Salem returns to action this Saturday when they host Georgia Wesleyan in another GSAC match at 4:00.
