Soccer uses 5 first half goals to defeat Hollins

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College soccer team used five first half goals to cruise to a 6-1 victory against Hollins University at home. Sawyer Ferguson (Billings, MT) scored 2 goals in the first 12 minutes to pace Salem to their third victory in a row. Salem improves to 3-1 overall, and Hollins drops to 1-3.

Ferguson got the scoring started in the 9th minute off of an assist by Bethany Kent (Manassas, VA). She would tally another goal 3 minutes later on a through ball by Anna Trakas (Tryon, NC). Amanda Orsino (Sauquoit, NY) added a goal in the 29th minute, which was assisted by Lauren Hansen (Jacksonville, NC). Trakas scored in the 31st minute off of an assist by Orsino. Erica Edwards (Raleigh, NC) scored an unassisted goal 3 minutes later to finish the first-half scoring.

Salem scored right off the bat in the second half in the 49th minute to go up 6-0, when Courtney Hedgecock (San Diego, CA) scored. Jessi Carter (Tampa, FL) had 2 saves for the Spirits, who outshot Hollins 24-3. Salem used 25 different players in the match.

The Spirits return to the road this weekend as they head to Alabama for their first conference match at Huntingdon on Saturday.
