Soccer picks up win in first conference match

Decatur, GA – The Salem College soccer team defeated Spelman College 2-1 in their first Great South match of the year. The Spirits out-shot the Jaguars 13-7, including 7-2 shots on goal. Salem improves to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the GSAC, and Spelman drops to 1-3 and 0-1.

Stephanie Hubbard (Sanford, NC) started the scoring in the 7th minute with a header on a corner kick by Bethany Kent (Manassas, VA). Spelman tied the game in the 27th minute and went into the break with a 1-1 tie.

Sawyer Ferguson (Billings, MT) scored the game winning goal in the 84th minute on an assist by Tarryn Bundy (West Deptford, NJ). Paige Ketchum (Jacksonville, NC) and Jessi Carter (Tampa, FL) each played a half in goal for Salem.

The Spirits return to action on Wednesday when they travel to non-conference opponent Ferrum College at 7:00.
