Ferguson, Hubbard, Schmidt selected to Scholar All-South Region Team

Kansas City, KS-The Salem College soccer team had three players selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-South Region Team for their play in 2013. Seniors, Stephanie Hubbard (Sanford, NC) and MacKenzie Schmidt (Columbus, OH), and junior, Sawyer Ferguson (Billings, MT), were all honored. 

 

This scholar team is made up of athletes from Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma from NCAA Division II and III schools. Salem was the only NCAA DIII from North

Carolina with any members selected, and they had the second most selections of any Division III team in the entire region. To be named to a scholar-all region team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average, start more than 50% of their games, be a junior or senior, and be a significant contributor to their team.

 

Ferguson, Hubbard, and Schmidt were all captains and they helped guide Salem to a sweep of the Great South Athletic Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championship. All three players were selected to the Great South All-Conference and All-Academic Teams.  The team ended their season in the first round of the NCAA Tournament with a 15-4-2 overall record.

Ferguson recently broke the all-time goals and points record for the soccer team as a red-shirt sophomore. Schmidt was the first Salem athlete in school history selected as a Scholar All-South Member last year. Hubbard was a three time All-South Region member and the 2013 Great South Player of the Year.

Hubbard is a Chemistry Major with a 3.53 GPA. Schmidt is a Teaching/Not for Profit Management Major with a 3.87 GPA. Ferguson is a Biochemistry Major with a 3.68 GPA.
