Jones and Schmidt named as Great South Players of the Week for Volleyball and Soccer

The GSAC has announced the fall sports week five Players of the Week and, following voting by the league’s sports information directors, student-athletes from Salem College swept the awards.

GSAC Women's Soccer Player of the Week – Mackenzie Schmidt of Salem

Mackenzie Schmidt, a senior from Columbus, Ohio, scored two goals and had three assists in a 2-0 week for Salem. She scored two goals in a 4-0 road win against NCAA Division II Chowan. She had three assists in a 10-0 win at Great South opponent Trinity Washington to help Salem improve to 7-3-2.

GSAC Volleyball Player of the Week – Chelsea Jones of Salem

Although the week was without a win, Salem College senior setter Chelsea Jones once again led her squad through two tough battles. Against William Peace she had 37 assists, one ace and 7 digs in 4 tough sets. Later in the week against Methodist, she had 35 assists, one ace and a remarkable 14 digs in 5 sets. She averaged 8 assists per set on the week and currently lead the GSAC in assists with a whopping 8.22 assists per set average.

The GSAC sports information directors nominate Player of the Week candidates and then vote on the top two nominees in each sport as selected by the conference office. Player of the Week voting occurs on Tuesdays and the weekly announcement of the winners is released eachWednesday morning.
