Soccer raises $165 for cancer research and defeats Ferrum 6-0

Winston-Salem, NC-In a game where the Salem College soccer team raised money for Play for the Cure, they also defeated Ferrum College 6-0. The Spirits raised $165 today that will be donated to The National Cancer Research Foundation. Taylor Norman (Fairfax, VA) scored twice, including a fantastic diving header in the win. Salem improves to 12-3-2 overall and Ferrum dropped to 6-8-2.

Sawyer Ferguson (Billings, MT) started the scoring in the 5th minute on an assist by Summer Rich (Morehead City, NC). MacKenzie Schmidt (Columbus, OH) scored less that 4 minutes later on an assist by Nataly Mojica (Dallas, TX). Stephanie Hubbard (Sanford, NC) finished a Bethany Kent (Manassas, VA) cross in the 21st minute. Less than 17 seconds later, Norman scored on a diving header off of a cross by Ferguson. Deanna Andrew (Climax, NC) finished the first half scoring in the 45th minute on an assist by Victoria Chaffers (Deltona, FL).

Norman scored 10 minutes into the second half on a Schmidt assist. Paige Ketchum (Jacksonville, NC) and Kenzie Rathe (Cloquet, MN) split the shut-out in goal. The Spirits had a 32-2 shot advantage and a 3-0 corner kick advantage.

Salem concludes their regular season on Saturday when they host conference rival Agnes Scott at 2:00. It will also be the senior game for six graduating players.
