Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College soccer team is set to travel to Costa Rica to compete in four soccer matches. Seventeen members of the soccer team are taking part in a January term course that will take them to San Jose, San Carlos in the rainforest, and Guanacasta on the Pacific Coast. The team departs on January 11th and will return to Salem on the 19th. 

"I am very excited about this opportunity for our team," said Head Coach Jay Callahan. "Three years ago we traveled to Italy, and now we get to experience Central America. The four games should be an interesting test for the team, and it will be great to match up against some unfamiliar opponents."

Salem will play four matches while in Costa Rica. They will play Codea and Dimas in San Jose, Liberia on the coast, and San Carlos in the rainforest. The team will also participate in community service at a school in Guanacasta.

As part of the course, Professor Rosa Otero from Salem will be teaching students about architecture in Costa Rica. The team will meet the architect of the most famous soccer stadium in the country, Saprissa Stadium, and tour the facilities. The Spirits will spend time at the beach, zip-lining through the rainforest, touring national museums, and they will spend the day at a hot springs near the Arenal Volcano.
