XC, Soccer, and Volleyball sweep GSAC Player of the Week Awards

The GSAC has announced the fall sports week four Players of the Week and, following voting by the league’s sports information directors, student-athletes from Salem College swept the awards.

 

GSAC Women's Soccer Player of the Week – Tarryn Bundy of Salem

Tarryn Bundy, a sophomore from West Deptford, N.J. scored 5 goals in only 21 minutes of action in the first Great South conference match of the season. Salem defeated Wesleyan 7-0 at home. Bundy scored the game-winning goal in the 8th minute. She scored two goals in the 14th minute and her fourth goal in the 17th minute, before she was subbed out. She played a little over five minutes in the 2nd half and scored in the 51st minute. 5 goals in a match is a record for Salem soccer. Bundy added another goal against Berry this week and an assist against Bridgewater in a 2-1 loss. She currently leads the Spirits with 10 goals.

 

GSAC Volleyball Player of the Week – Michelle Morgan of Salem

Senior middle hitter, Michelle Morgan, started out quickly in Salem's first

conference match against Wesleyan this weekend. She not only lead both teams in kills with 21, but she tallied more than all Wesleyan hitters combined. Additionally, she hit a stellar .474 for the match and added 5 digs and 1 block solo. She carried on the weekend play against Allen University with 11 kills and a .556 hitting percentage. In the Allen match, she added 3 aces and 2 digs. Morgan currently leads the conference in kills, kills per set and hitting percentage.

 



GSAC Cross Country Runner of the Week - Stephanie Verdi of Salem

Junior Stephanie Verdi lead the Salem College Cross Country Team to a 2nd place finish among six D-III teams at the Greensboro Cross Country Invitational. Salem's overall finish was 5th of 11, defeating two D-II and four D-III teams. Verdi completed the 5k course in a time of 20:42, her second best career time. Verdi was the 3rd-place NCAA DIII runner in the meet.

 

The GSAC sports information directors nominate Player of the Week candidates and then vote on the top two nominees in each sport as selected by the conference office. Player of the Week voting occurs on Tuesdays and the weekly announcement of the winners is released eachWednesday morning. This report, including photography, can be found at www.greatsouth.org
