Greensboro Edges Salem in Intercity Swimming Clash

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Salem swimming wrapped up its second meet of the season on Saturday, October 30th, with 13 Top-3 finishes. The Spirits were led individually by Allison Wakefield, who had four Top-3 performances, and Abigail Hawkins who reached the podium on three occasions.

Hawkins capped off her afternoon with a pair of first-place performances in the 50 butterfly, logging a time of 31.51, and the 50 backstroke with a mark of 41.25. She also grabbed third in the 50 freestyle, touching the wall in 32.93.

Wakefield's day included a first-place in the 500 freestyle, which she finished in 8:10.00. The Lillington, N.C., native also claimed three second-place finishes in the 1000 freestyle (16:33.00), 100 backstroke (1:43.66) and 100 freestyle (1;19.49).

First year Sophia Lee wrapped up her collegiate debut for the Spirits with a trio of Top-3 performances. She grabbed second in both the 100 individual medley (1:49.66) and 100 breaststroke (1:41.37) as well as third-place in the 50 breaststroke (44.45). She wrapped up her day with a seventh-place finish in the 100 freestyle, posting a time of 1:47.69.

Olivia Nivens, who joined the swimming team after finishing the 2021 soccer slate, notched a pair of Top-3 finishes. She tapped the wall third in the 50 backstroke, marking a time of 41.18, and was third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:21.81. Competing in four events, Nivens was fourth in the 50 freestyle with a mark of 38.69 and fifth in the 50 breaststroke, posting a time of 53.10.

The final Top-3 finish of the day belonged to Anna Fretwell, who was second in the 500 freestyle, her first race as a collegiate swimmer. Fretwell wrapped up that event in 9:50.59, placing fourth in the 100 freestyle (1:34.19) and sixth in the 50 freestyle (41.10).

Kylie Clark debuted with a fourth-place finish in the 50 backstroke (48.46), fifth in the 100 freestyle (1:38.58) and seventh in the 50 freestyle (45.05). Teammate Tori Long, also competing in her first match of the slate, was fifth in the 50 backstroke (1:01.59), sixth in the 100 freestyle (1:42.90) and touched the wall eighth in the 50 freestyle (46.25).

Greensboro claimed the 78-72 team win in the meet. Salem will return to action on Saturday, November 6th, when the Spirits take part in the Guilford Invitational at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
