Nivens Earns Pair of Top-50 Finishes as Salem Completes Guilford Invitational

The Salem swim team wrapped up its appearance at the Guilford Invitational at the Greensboro Aquatic Center on Saturday, November 6, with six Top-50 finishes, including a pair of 19th-place relay performances.

Among the top individual finishers on the afternoon for the Spirits was first year Olivia Nivens, who placed 44th overall in the 200 individual medley (3:34.21) and posted a 49th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:55.07). Teammate Sophia Lee also laid claim to a Top-50 finish, posting the 45th-best time in the 100 breaststroke (1:41.33), while Abigail Hawkins was 50th in the same event with a mark of 1:56.78.

Salem had two relay units that finished 19th at the Guilford Invitational. The team of Tori Long, Kylie Clark, Anna Fretwell and Nivens wrapped up the 200 freestyle relay in 2:33.54. Meanwhile, the unit of Allison Wakefield, Hawkins, Lee and Nivens combined for a time of 2:48.39 in the 200 medley relay.

Nivens competed in six events over the course of the meet, placing 55th overall in the 100 backstroke (1:37.91) and 61st in the 200 freestyle (3:12.06). She was also 73rd in the 50 freestyle (35.20) and tapped the wall 91st in the 100 freestyle (1:20.50).

Wakefield had one of the best overall performances for Salem, finishing among the Top-60 swimmers in three events. She was 51st overall in the 100 breaststroke (1:56.87) and 57th in both the 100 backstroke (1:39.06) and the 100 backstroke (1:39.06). Wakefield tapped the wall of the 100 freestyle in 1:17.00, placing 87th in the event.

Hawkins took part in three races throughout the course of the day. Along with her 50th-place performance in the 100 breaststroke, Hawkins finished 52nd in the 100 backstroke (1:29.56), 74th in the 50 freestyle (35.21) and was 90th in the 100 freestyle (1:19.89).

Fretwell, who participated in the second-most (five) events of any Salem swimmer, enjoyed her best finish (52nd) in the 100 breaststroke (2:01.47). She had a pair of 63rd-place performances in both the 100 backstroke (2:03.33) and 200 freestyle (3:30.55) races. Fretwell touched the wall of the 50 freestyle race in 41.35 and was 96th in the 100 freestyle with a mark of 1:29.19.

Lee, who competed in four events for Salem including the 100 breaststroke, closed out the 200 freestyle with a 64th-place performance at a pace of 3:42.00. She also swam in the 50 freestyle, closing 84th in a time of 42.85, and was 99th in the 100 freestyle (1:32.75).

Clark saw action in three events at the Greensboro Aquatic Center on Saturday, placing 60th in the 100 backstroke (1:53.43), 81st in the 50 freestyle (40.77) and 100th in the 100 freestyle (1:39.18). Long was also an active participant in three races, capping off her best finish of the day (65th) in the 200 freestyle (3:44.01). She was also 85th in the 50 freestyle (43.15) and 98th overall in the 100 freestyle (1:32.28).

Salem returns to action on Wednesday, November 17th, when the Spirits head to Raleigh to compete in the William Peace Invitational that takes place from November 17-20.
