Salem Tennis Completes First Match of Weekend

MEISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Salem tennis team wrapped up its first match of the weekend with a 9-0 setback to USA South Conference foe Pfeiffer in Meisenheimer, N.C.

Pfeiffer (8-5, 4-1 USA South) picked up the first point of the afternoon when the pairing of Darby Sherrill and Delaney Geygan posted an 8-0 win over Ashley Linden and Gina Franco. That lead moved to 2-0 after Sydney Gray and Elithe Hudson triumphed by the same margin over the Salem (0-6, 0-4 USA South) combination of Alyssa Consentino and Alyson Gammons.

The final doubles point for the Falcons came from the tandem of Megan Rekieta and Alison Sloop, who completed an 8-2 victory against No. 1 pair McKinley Rice and Haley Gilley.

Rekieta claimed her second win of the day, this time in No. 1 singles with a victory against Gilley, who retired. Sherrill extended the Pfeiffer lead to 5-0 in the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Cosentino in No. 3 singles.

With the team victory clinched, Pfeiffer's Brittany Mills picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win against Gammons. The margin moved to 7-0 when a pair of 6-0, 6-0 victories by Geygan, who defeated Natasha Guo. Sloop claimed her second win of the match, this time as No. 5 singles player, with a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Linden.

The final win of the afternoon in singles for Pfeiffer came from No. 2 seed Gray, who posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Rice.

The Spirits wrap up the weekend with a clash against USA South rival Greensboro at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 9th. The two teams will meet at Greensboro Day School tennis courts.
