Spirits Claim Home Win Over William Peace

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem tennis team claimed its first home win since October 2019 on Wednesday, April 13th, when it emerged with a 5-4 victory over William Peace in USA South tennis action at Bert Lain Tennis Center.

Salem (2-6, 2-4 USA South) opened the match by claiming a default win in No. 3 doubles with the duo of Ashley Linden and Gina Franco being credited with the victory. However, William Peace (1-9, 0-1 USA South) rebounded to claim the No. 1 doubles by an 8-1 margin as Hayley McNair and Camryn Straughn defeated McKinley Rice and Haley Gilley. That was followed by Mya Sampson and Abbie Papale emerging with an 8-6 win in No. 2 doubles over the Salem pair of Alyssa Cosentino and Alyson Gammons.

Natasha Guo earned a default point for Salem in No. 6 singles action, evening the match at 2-2. McNair quickly turned the score in favor of the Pacers with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Gilley in the No. 1 singles.

William Peace grabbed the fourth point of the match, assuming a two-point advantage, when Straughn posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Rice in No. 2 singles. Salem bounced back and trimmed the margin to one after a decisive 6-0, 6-0 win by Gammons in No. 4 singles over Kayla Lynch-McLain.

The Spirits eventually evened the score with their second straight singles win (6-3, 6-3) by virtue of Cosentino's defeat of Sampson in the clash of No. 3 singles. The match victory hinged on the battle in No. 5 singles, which was earned by Linden, who defeated Papale by a 6-2, 6-2 margin.

The victory marks the seventh straight for Salem in the series against William Peace and 11th all-time in the head-to-head series with the Pacers.

The Spirits make a quick turnaround to the court on Thursday afternoon, when they face Meredith at 1 p.m. at Bert Lain Tennis Center.
