Meredith Halts Salem Tennis’ Streak at Two

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Meredith tennis team halted Salem's recent winning streak at two matches with a 9-0 victory at the Bert Lain Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon.

With weather impending on the USA South Conference clash the two teams competed in singles matches first with Meredith grabbing a 1-0 lead as Ellie Osborne claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Salem's (2-7, 2-5 USA South) Alyssa Cosentino in No. 2 action. Aly Henneberry followed her teammates' lead with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Haley Gilley in No. 1 singles.

The third Meredith point of the afternoon came from Summer Elkins, who defeated Alyson Gammons by a 6-0, 6-0 margin in No. 3 singles. Savannah Duduk was responsible for the fourth Avenging Angel point of the match in No. 5 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Gina Franco.

Ryann Jennings stretched the lead to 5-0, claiming the team win for Meredith, with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Natasha Guo in No. 6 singles play. The Avenging Angels claimed their sixth point of the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-0 win by Claire Southern over Ashley Linden in No. 4 singles play.

Henneberry and Osborne teamed up to put the seventh point on the board in No. 1 doubles with an 8-2 win against Gilley and Gammons. Southern and Dudak answered with an 8-0 win over Linden and Franco, marking the eighth point, before Elkins and Jennings came through with an 8-3 victory in the No. 3 doubles against the Spirits' pairing of Cosentino and Guo.

The Spirits will now turn their attention to USA South Conference rival N.C. Wesleyan, who will make the trip to Winston-Salem for a 1 p.m. clash with Salem on Monday, April 18th.
