Salem Opens Season With Promise

Raleigh, NC- The Salem College Volleyball opened up their 2007 season Saturday at the Peace College Invitational Tournament. First year Head Coach Amanda Ziemba took Salem’s brand new team into battle against Elizabeth City State University (3-3) in the first match of the day. The Spirits battled hard against their Division II foe as they lost in 3 sets 21-30, 20-30, and 17-30. Whitney Sorenson (Glendale, AZ) had 7 kills, 4 assists, 1 blocks and 2 aces. Christine Tillman (King, NC) had 6 kills, 1 block and 1 ace. According to Coach Ziemba, Alyssa Alcos (Jacksonville, FL) had a great game on defense and all the Spirits played hard in their taste of competition in 2007.

Salem College played Peace College in the second match of the tournament. It was exciting to watch as Salem bounced back from a close 31-33 loss in the first game to blow by the Peace Pacers in the second game 30-16. The Spirits finished the match with 25-30 and 19-30 losses to end the tournament with a 0-2 record. Against Peace, Whitney Sorenson had 16 kills, 4 blocks, 3 aces and 6 assists. Christine Tillman had 20 kills, 1 ace and 1 block. Katie Lineberger (Maiden, NC) had 11 kills, 4 blocks and 3 assists. “Katie and Anna Maia (Montgomery, AL) played well against Peace as the whole team came together to almost pull out a victory.

The volleyball team will return to action on September 7-8 as they play in the Chowan Tournament in Murfreesboro, NC.
