Sorenson is Named to All-Tournament Team

October 6, 2007

Washington, D.C.- Salem College Volleyball traveled north to play in the 2nd Annual Worthington Classic Friday afternoon and all day Saturday. Salem fell to Marymount (20-30, 22-30, 18-30) and D’Youville (18-30, 17-30, 19-30) on Friday. On Saturday, Salem College rebounded to play Peace College tough only to fall by the scores of 30-32, 30-27, 29-31, 13-30. In the final game of the Classic, Gallaudet University defeated Salem 19-30, 15-30, 15-30.

Whitney Sorenson (Jr., Glendale, AZ) was named to the All-Tournament Team as she had 44 kills, 7 blocks, 7 aces and 37 digs for the weekend. Christine Tillman (FY, King, NC) had 23 kills, 21 blocks, 25 digs and 2 aces. Katie Lineberger (Jr., Maiden, NC) had 21 kills, 11 blocks, 30 digs and 1 ace. Tani Hatch (FY, Salt Lake City, UT) had 3 kills, 1 block, 3 aces and 3 digs against D’Youville College.

“Overall we played well in this tournament,” said Head Coach Amanda Ziemba. “We played teams that were better than us and when you do that, you hope your team steps up and plays up to that level.  Our team had some great moments over the weekend, but they were often overshadowed by the things we did wrong.  Sometimes I have to remind myself this is young team.  I have always hated it when coaches said that, but it is true.  We are vastly improved from the beginning of the season and our record does not reflect the level of play these young women are capable of producing.”

“I am very happy that Whitney got selected to the all-tournament team, she is our team and floor captain, and she is more than willing to do whatever I ask of her.  She is the type of player a program can be built around, I wish she was not a junior and I could have her for another 3 years.”
